Dallas sues brother, mom of NBA star Chris Bosh to stop hosting illegal parties at vacant warehouse

DALLAS ?? Dallas city attorneys have filed an injunction against NBA player Chris Bosh?s younger brother to get him to stop hosting illegal parties at his mother?s vacant Cedars area warehouse like the one that police allege?led to a chaotic outburst of fights and gunfire last weekend.?

The five-story structure at S. 1401 Ervay St. was to be the location of the so-called #NotANormalParty on Saturday night, which promoters promised would have a different party on each of the floors. There was the ?fun and wild party? on the first floor, complete with a bounce house, mud wrestling, mechanical bull ride and a wet T-shirt contest.?

The second floor would?ve been covered with foam. The third, coined the ?Trippy/iHate Bein Sober floor? apparently said attendees ?must take shot to enter.? Above that was the ?Rave/Glow Party? and then the anticlimactically named ?club? on the fifth floor.?

That planning was all for naught: Dallas police shut down the event as attendees lined Ervay. In a YouTube video, a man purporting to be the organizer bragged, ?We still had 1,006 people in line, waiting to pay to get in.??

Promoters tried to move the party to a salon in the 2500 block of Royal Lane in North Dallas, but the owner ordered everyone out when the mass of people arrived. Shortly after midnight, the scene grew chaotic ?? police say four people were shot at a McDonald's a block east and fights broke out at a nearby gas station.?

The city was already fed up with the parties there. The injunction, first obtained by The Dallas Morning News, was filed a day prior in a Dallas County District Court against Joel Bosh and his mother Freida Bosh. According to the city, ?the property is unsafe for human use or occupation because it has various health and safety violations.??

?Despite these dangerous conditions being present on the Property, Mr. Bosh continues to occupy the Property,? the document reads.?

Promoters have hosted parties at the warehouse since at least 2011, when someone threw a watch party during the NBA Finals that pitted the Dallas Mavericks against hometown boy Chris Bosh and his Miami Heat. On New Years Eve of 2012, a promotion group named 5 Star Lifestylin ENT held a two-story party there with, according to the Facebook event posting, a capacity of at least 500.?

The lawsuit alleges Joel Bosh is behind these: ?Mr. Bosh promotes or contracts with others to promote nightclub type special events on the Property,? it says.?

On January 25, 2011, city inspectors denied the venue a certificate of occupancy after it ?failed every category of safety code, including electrical, plumbing, mechanical and structural inspections.? The lawsuit says the city has issued ?numerous notices? and contacted the owner to ask them to stop.?

The lawsuit threatens to fine Freida and Joel Bosh $1,000 for each day there?s a party at 1401 S. Ervay going forward. The city says it?s tried to deliver the injunction to Bosh?s ?agent and representative? Larenzo Maxfield and hasn?t received a response.? This, ?despite two voicemails left on his cell phone.? News 8 has also left a voicemail with Maxfield seeking comment.?

Nevertheless, Dallas police have been called to the location 10 times since 2009. A sampling of police reports show a slew of assaults there. In the wee hours of January 1, a man allegedly punched his significant other in the face when she tried to block the exit, according to a police report. ?

Joel Bosh himself was brutally beaten on July 19, 2012 ?? a police report shows Bosh?s assailant hit him in the jaw and ribs while donning gloves ?possibly with metal knuckles on them.? The battered Bosh checked into the emergency room that night.?

But long before the building hosted events like 2012?s ?Twerk Fest,? 1401 S. Ervay St. was home to the Hughes Brothers Manufacturing Company, which produced sweet smelling ice cream cones.?

Now, the commercial property lies dormant; or the city says it should, anyway. Still, the county values the property at $2,286,880. Freida Bosh is listed as its sole owner.?She has not responded to a request for comment.?

CBS Sports: SEC Expert Predictions

CBSSports.com's panel of experts break down what to expect in the SEC during the 2013 season:

Offensive Player of the Year: AJ McCarron, QB, Alabama. Nation's most efficient passer with 30 TD and only 3 INT last season. Has the best set of receivers in Alabama history.

Defensive Player of the year: Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina. One of the best athletes to ever play the position. DE Lorenzo Ward says Clowney cannot be blocked when he doesn't want to be blocked.

Top Newcomer: Robert Nkemdiche, DE, Ole Miss: The nation's No. 1 recruit last season has a big impact in his first season in college ball.

Coach of the Year: Steve Spurrier, South Carolina. The Head Ball coach finally has a schedule with no LSU or Alabama. He has beaten Georgia three straight years.

Next coordinator to become a head coach: Kirby Smart, DC, Alabama. It's just matter of finding a job good enough for him to leave the comforts of Tuscaloosa. He could have gone to Auburn last season.

Next head coach to become a coordinator: Gary Pinkel, Missouri. It would not be fair because he needs time to recruit linemen to play at the SEC level. But he's the closest thing the SEC has to a coach on the hot seat.

Most intriguing conference game: Alabama at Texas A&M, Sept. 14. Winner has the inside track to the SEC West championship and probably a spot in the BCS title game.

Most intriguing non-conference game: Georgia at Clemson, Aug. 31. Both teams in preseason Top 10. Two of the most productive quarterbacks (Aaron Murray, Tajh Boyd) in college football. The two campuses are only 90 miles apart.

Bold conference prediction: Georgia QB Aaron Murray will finish the season as the SEC's all-time leading passer but be the third team All-SEC quarterback behind AJ McCarron and Johnny Manziel.

Offensive Player of the Year: Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia. In some sense, Dawgs are going to have to outscore people to win. Soon-to-be all-time SEC passer can handle it.

Defensive Player of the Year: Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina. Are you kidding? Asked how he would defend himself, JC said, "You got to grab and hold on."

Top Newcomer: Laquon Treadwell, WR Ole Miss. Nation's top receiver fits perfectly in Hugh Freeze's offense. The next Julio Jones?

Coach of the Year: Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M. Two years ago he was at Houston. Two years into the SEC, he has the returning Heisman Trophy winner.

Next coordinator to become a head coach: Kirby Smart, Alabama. Thought he'd be gone by now. Just waiting for the right job.

Next head coach to become a coordinator: Gary Pinkel, Missouri. With four new coaches, not many coaches on the hot seat. If Pinkel doesn't win seven, though ...

Most intriguing conference game: Alabama at Texas A&M, Sept. 14. The loser can still play for the national championship.

Most intriguing non-conference game: Georgia at Clemson, Aug. 31. The winner stays in the national title hunt for weeks to come.

Bold conference prediction: A team from the SEC West will win the national championship, but it won't be Alabama. Texas A&M going all-in for Sept. 14 game with the Tide.

Offensive Player of the Year: Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M: Doubt he wins a second Heisman in a row, but still expect a huge year from him now that's gotten stronger and more seasoning

Defensive Player of the Year: Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina: Most dominant defender we've seen in more than a generation. Even double-teams don't stop him.

Top Newcomer: DeMarcus Robinson, WR, Florida: Gators desperately need a play-making WR to step up and the 6-2, 200-pound freshman has coaches fired up.

Coach of the Year: Nick Saban. If anyone can pull off winning three titles in a row, it's Mr. Process.

Next coordinator to become a head coach: Bama OC Doug Nussmeier. His colleague Kirby Smart had chances and passed em up. Not sure Nuss will pass them up this winter.

Next head coach to become a coordinator: Closest thing to a hot seat in SEC is Gary Pinkel. He won a ton of games at a place not used to winning but that was before the SEC. He needs to get the Tigers to a bowl game just to be safe.

Most intriguing conference game: Alabama at Texas A&M, Sept. 14.

Most intriguing non-conference game: Georgia at Clemson, Aug. 31.

Bold conference prediction: In 2013, for the first time ever, a defensive lineman will win the Heisman. Jadeveon Clowney is that special and the era of social media and 24-hour sports news cycle will help keep people buzzing about him.

Offensive Player of the Year: Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia. While the trio of star SEC quarterbacks (McCarron, Manziel, Murray) garner the attention, Gurley will quietly outperform them by eclipsing his 1,385 yards and 17 touchdowns from his freshman year. The league's best returning running back (though Alabama's T.J. Yeldon might disagree) is in a system designed to showcase him and will carry Georgia to at least one top-five win in SEC play.

Defensive Player of the Year: C.J. Mosley, LB, Alabama. No doubt Jadeveon Clowney is the league's most dominant defensive player, but Mosley might be the most versatile -- or the most impactful. He has ideal range, lifts the play of teammates and, according to a team source, is the most instinctual linebacker Saban's had at Alabama. That's saying something.

Top Newcomer: Ricky Seals-Jones, WR, Texas A&M. If defenses double-cover Mike Evans, quarterback Johnny Manziel will look to Seals-Jones, arguably the most athletic wideout on the Aggies roster. The coveted recruit from the 2013 class is explosive for his size (6-5, 230)

Coach of the Year: South Carolina's Steve Spurrier. Despite back-to-back seasons of 10 or more wins, Spurrier is still waiting to do one thing at South Carolina: Win an SEC title. With a manageable schedule and plenty of talent at several key spots, he might do just that.

Next coordinator to become a head coach: Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. Smart can have a job any offseason he wants it, but he's been selective and appears to be waiting on the perfect SEC job (Saban's successor, perhaps?). If Smart doesn't bolt, Georgia's defensive coordinator Todd Grantham or Florida offensive coordinator Brent Pease could be next.

Next head coach to become a coordinator: Missouri's Gary Pinkel. In a relatively slow offseason for hot seats in the league, Pinkel's is lukewarm at best. Two straight sub-.500 seasons to start off SEC membership wouldn't exactly land Pinkel an extension. Perhaps better health can push the Tigers above an injury-riddled 2012.

Most intriguing conference game: Alabama at Texas A&M, Sept. 14. This game is so hyped, it's hard to look anywhere else. Manziel and McCarron. Saban and Sumlin. Manning camp and the alarm clock. Don't expect a route in this one. Manziel's still a potential matchup problem for Bama up front because of his mobility.

Most intriguing non-conference game: Georgia at Clemson, Aug. 31. Clemson is looking to improve the ACC's 4-11 record against the SEC since 2011. Its explosive offensive attack will stretch a Bulldogs defense that replaces several starters.

Bold conference prediction: Why isn't Les Miles getting the benefit of the doubt for being able to replace 11 early NFL draft defections when Nick Saban most certainly would? The Tigers will usurp the SEC West when no one's expecting it, but in the end Steve Spurrier will get his first SEC title in Columbia.

* - Conference champion.

Samsung caught boosting benchmark performance numbers on Exynos devices

Samsung caught

Benchmarks often catch the ire of critics because their scores don't necessarily reflect real-world experience, and it appears that some Samsung devices aren't helping that reputation out at all. Our friends at Anandtech started sifting through data for two Exynos octacore variants of the Galaxy S 4, and discovered multiple benchmarks that appear to run those devices at higher CPU and GPU clock speeds than they normally run. Some of the apps included in the report are GLBench 2.5.1, AnTuTu, Quadrant and Linpack. Coincidentally, the site also found code within the GS4 that indicates the existence of a program called "BenchmarkBooster," which is responsible for overclocking the processors when certain apps are running. Is this an evil plot by Samsung to take over the world using rogue benchmarking results? Is this something other manufacturers are doing? It's hard to say, but there is certainly something curious afoot. Check out the source to get all of the skinny on what exactly is going on.

China opens pipeline to bring gas from Myanmar

BEIJING --?

China has switched on a pipeline bringing natural gas from Myanmar, a state company said Monday, in a project that has raised concerns in Myanmar's nascent civil society about whether its giant neighbor's resource grabs will benefit local people.

The 793-kilometer (493-mile) pipeline connects the Bay of Bengal with southwest China's Yunnan province and is expected to transfer 12 billion cubic meters of natural gas to China annually, according to a news release on the website of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). A parallel 771-kilometer (479-mile) pipeline that will carry Middle East oil ? shipped via the Indian Ocean ? is still under construction.

China's investments, largely in energy and mining, have generated controversy in Myanmar because they have done little to relieve that country's chronic power shortages. In response, the Myanmar government abruptly suspended construction in 2011 of the China-backed Myitsone dam, which would displace thousands and flood the spiritual heartland of Myanmar's Kachin ethnic minority.

While the pipelines are expected to provide only a small proportion of China's oil and gas consumption, they are strategically important to Beijing. The gas pipeline that began operating Sunday offers a nearby source of gas, and the oil pipeline would eliminate the need for tankers from the Middle East to pass through the crowded Malacca Strait between Malaysia and Indonesia.

The two joint ventures are between state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and Myanmar's national petroleum company Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise. Four other companies from India and South Korea also have stakes in the project, according to CNPC.

For years, China was the closest ally of Myanmar's military regime, which was shunned by the West because of its poor human rights record and failure to hand power to an elected government. Since 2011, when an elected, though still military-backed, government took office, Myanmar has undergone political and economic reforms and has courted investment from the West.

The reforms have brought heightened activity from nongovernment and civil society groups in Myanmar, said Tony Nash, Singapore-based managing director of economics and risk consulting for IHS, an independent economic consultant. This, together with growing competition from Western companies in Myanmar, will push Chinese companies to be more transparent about how their investments will affect the local population, he said.

In April, hundreds of people protested in western Rakhine state against the pipeline, saying they had to give up their land for too little compensation and that salaries offered for local pipeline workers were too low.

"Some of the responses to that protest back in April were really specific to looking at community needs and responding with corporate social responsibility at the local level," said Nash. Chinese companies are increasingly "saying 'we hear you and we want to make a commitment for corporate social responsibility,' you are seeing Chinese companies becoming a bit more savvy in that respect," he said.

Wong Aung, who heads the Shwe Gas Movement, which campaigns against the pipelines on human rights and environmental grounds, said the government and companies have not clarified how the project's benefits would be shared.

"The contracts made by the previous government need to be reviewed to see whether they guarantee the national interest and rights of every citizen and whether they meet international standards or not," he said.

Even on the Chinese side of the border, opposition to the pipeline has been strong. In May, more than 2,000 people worried about air and water pollution protested in Kunming in Yunnan against a planned petroleum refinery connected to the project.

This Psychedelic Fever Dream Is Made Of Ink, Soap And Oil

You may not interact with ink as much as you used to, but you have to give it credit for powering millions of pens and a crap ton of printing. We still consume a lot of media that exists because of ink. And a good way to celebrate it might be to just let it flow and see what happens. Ruslan Khasanov, a Russian graphic designer, felt the same way so he mixed ink, oil and soap to make this trippy and awesome video called Pacific Light. Khasanov was inspired when he watched black beads of soy sauce form in oil while he was cooking. There are great stills and gifs on his Behance. Kind of makes me long for a tie die comeback. DNP Xbox One Wireless Controller, Play and Charge kit and Headset up for preorder

Already locked down your Xbox One Day One Edition order? Now's your chance to also reserve its initial batch of accessories (including that mono Chat Headset, which isn't included with the console). The Wireless Controller ($60), Play and Charge Kit ($25) and Chat Headset ($25) for the Xbox One have all popped up for pre-order at the Microsoft Store. The One's gamepad rings up at five bones more than the 360 variant, but it's also available as a $75 bundle with the Play and Charge Kit (roughly 10 dollars in savings). Joystiq notes that Gamestop and Amazon are also options, albeit only for the controller itself. If you plan to reserve any of the accessories, we'd suggest taking Microsoft's Dec 31st arrival date as a loose estimate -- the One releases in November and Amazon is pegging the controller for November 27th.

Neighborhood patrols ponder gun use after Zimmerman case

By Jonathan Kaminsky

FOX ISLAND, Washington (Reuters) - On a recent afternoon Kent Holder drove his Ford pickup truck, emblazoned with "Citizens' Patrol" magnetic decals, through this leafy enclave west of Tacoma, Washington, recalling when he learned that George Zimmerman had shot and killed an unarmed teenager - and was a neighborhood watch volunteer.

"I thought, ?Boy, did he ever screw up,'" said Holder, 74, a retired fireman and five-year neighborhood patrol veteran.

In Holder's view, Zimmerman violated two basic tenets of the watch program: Never confront a person you perceive to be suspicious, and never carry a weapon while on duty.

Last weekend, a Florida jury acquitted Zimmerman, 29, of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, who was unarmed, in Sanford, Florida. The case has focused fresh attention on the civilian patrols by law enforcement and trainers.

Zimmerman, 29, who is white and Hispanic, spotted Martin, who was black, as the teenager walked to the home of his father's fianc?e from a convenience store. Zimmerman thought Martin looked suspicious and called the police. The two had a confrontation and Martin ended up dead.

The National Sheriffs' Association's neighborhood watch program was established in 1972 to combat a spike in suburban and rural burglaries.

It was designed to empower civilians to act as "the eyes and ears of law enforcement" without taking matters into their own hands, said John Thompson, who directs the initiative. The association's 37-page manual states that patrol members should be told that "they shall not carry weapons."

While the group is seen as an authority, fewer than a third of the estimated 90,000 neighborhood watch groups in existence nationwide have registered with it, said Thompson. Zimmerman's watch group was not among those registered, he said.

"I could show you 50 groups with 50 different sets of rules," Thompson said.

During the trial, Wendy Dorival, a civilian with the Sanford, Florida, police department, testified that she trained Zimmerman on neighborhood watch protocol, advising him to avoid initiating confrontations. It was not clear whether she counseled him on whether to carry a gun.

Barring guns from civilian patrols is a legal gray area since most U.S. citizens have the legal right to bear arms, said Kenneth Novak, a criminologist at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, who has studied watch programs.

Local watch groups, as private entities, are on relatively firm legal ground in setting no-weapons policies for their members, Novak said, but law enforcement agencies mandating such rules could run the risk of exceeding their authority.

"People participating in neighborhood watch enjoy all the legal protections under the Constitution, as well as state and federal law," said Novak. "That can include carrying a weapon."

Jeffrey Dehan, a sergeant who advises neighborhood watch groups as part of his duties with the Thurston County Sheriff's Office in Washington state, says it is not their role to offer guidance on whether members should carry a weapon.

"We don't advocate 'should or shouldn't,'" he said.

Carmen Caldwell, the executive director of Citizens' Crime Watch of Miami-Dade, in Florida, said that in the wake of the Zimmerman case, some trainers and others were considering new safeguards, which could include background checks on prospective members and teaching about racial profiling.

Holder, the ex-fireman from Washington, said fallout from the Trayvon Martin shooting has been minimal.

"There was concern that we would've had something negative from it," he said. "But nobody has ever said, 'You guys shouldn't be out here.' They love us. They love having us."

Hunter Mahan chooses his daughter's birth over golf

Hunter Mahan was leading the RBC Canadian Open golf tournament on Saturday. But then his wife went into labor. So, Hunter Mahan withdrew from the tournament.

Adios! Hunter Mahan waves after sinking a birdie putt on the 18th hole during the second round at the Canadian Open golf tournament in Oakville, Ontario. Mahan was leading the tournament on Saturday July 27, when he withdrew to attend the birth of his first child.

Players are expected to call penalties on themselves, even if no one is looking.

That's why it's fitting that Hunter Mahan ? who was leading the RBC Canadian Open after two rounds ?? withdrew to attend the birth of his daughter. Mahan did the right thing ? for himself, for golf, and for fathers everywhere.

That's not to say that it was an easy decision. Mahan hasn't won a PGA tournament this year. He finished in the top 10 in two recent big tournaments ? the US Open and the British Open Championship. Going into Saturday's third round, he was leading by two shots. And if he had won, Mahan would have pocketed a $1,008,000 winner's check.

How many new dad's would walk away from a $1 million pay day?

The baby wasn't due for a few weeks. But then his phone rang Saturday morning, while he was warming up on the practice range. His wife was in labor, her water had broken. He didn't hesitate. He politely left the tournament.

?I received exciting news a short time ago that my wife Kandi has gone into labor with our first child,? said Mahan. ?As a result, I have withdrawn from the RBC Canadian Open to return to Dallas. I would like to extend my very sincere gratitude and appreciation to RBC and the RBC Canadian Open.

"Kandi and I are thrilled about this addition to the Mahan family and we look forward to returning to the RBC Canadian Open in the coming years.?

Mahan is not the first golfer to face the challenge of fatherhood vs. work. As Yahoo Sports writer Jay Busbee wrote: "Back in 1999, Phil Mickelson famously wore a beeper during the U.S. Open. His daughter was born the day after Mickelson lost to Payne Stewart. More recently, Ross Fisher vowed to walk off the course at the 2009 British Open no matter what if he heard his wife was going into labor; he was just one stroke behind leader Tom Watson at the time."

And last fall, Chicago Bears cornerback Charles Tillman caused a stir when he suggested that the birth of his child would take precedent over showing up for his job. It sparked conversations on talk radio and in social media about work and family priorities. Tillman said:

"[Football will] always be second or third in my life. That was a great lesson learned, to teach me that family ? when I?m done playing football ? my family will always be there for me.?

As The Christian Science Monitor reported at the time, "Tillman's announcement drew criticism from some sports columnists and fans. Sport radio talk show starkly framed the question: "If you only work 16 days a year, should you miss one for the birth of your child?"

Tillman's daughter was eventually born on a Monday, saving the NFL player and fans from any further controversy.

But Mahan's daughter Zoe arrived on a work day. As a father, it's unlikely Mahan will regret the decision to leave the golf tournament. And there are probably more than a few dads ? who missed the birth of their first child ? who would now gladly give a $1 million to be there.

State Republican parties mired in dysfunction

(AP) ? Plagued by infighting and deep ideological divisions, state Republican parties from Alaska to Maine are mired in dysfunction. Several state Republican leaders have been forced out or resigned in recent months, and many state GOP parties face financial problems and skeptical national leaders.

Democrats are not immune to such problems, but the conflicts on the Republican side highlight the tug of war over the GOP's future as national leaders work to improve the party's brand. At the same time, the Republican dysfunction raises questions about the GOP's ability to coordinate political activities in key battleground states ahead of next year's midterm congressional elections.

"There's been a lot of division and disharmony in the Republican Party," newly elected Maine GOP Chairman Rick Bennett told The Associated Press.

National GOP officials say help is on the way.

The Republican National Committee announced Wednesday that it has hired a dozen state directors to work closely with state parties, the first major step in GOP Chairman Reince Priebus' plan to erase the long-standing political advantage Democrats enjoy in some states.

Maine Republicans elected Bennett last weekend following the sudden resignations of the state GOP's top two officials. The former state Senate president inherited significant operating deficits and continued divisions between the party's moderate and libertarian factions, just as high-profile campaigns for governor and the U.S. Senate are beginning to ramp up.

Maine Republicans are not alone.

The Illinois state GOP chairman resigned in May after party moderates clashed with social conservatives over the chairman's support for gay marriage. The Alaska Republican Party is on its third chairman this year; party activists ousted the first two over fundraising concerns. The Minnesota GOP also has cycled through chairmen and long has been troubled by financial issues.

And state parties in Nevada and Iowa are largely controlled by members of the GOP's libertarian wing, a group that's known for criticizing the very same Republican establishment leaders they're supposed to be cooperating with heading into the 2014 campaign season. Problems have been lingering for much of the past year.

"The job of a state party is to attack Democrats and build an infrastructure that helps elect more Republicans to state and federal office," said Ryan Williams, an aide to Mitt Romney's 2012 GOP presidential campaign. Williams, who worked closely with state parties during last year's campaign, said some "were so dysfunctional, mismanaged and crippled by infighting that national Republicans had to work around them and set up shadow organizations to build our ground game."

Republicans note that Democratic state parties also have faced dysfunction in recent months.

Alabama's state party has struggled to pay its bills and faced eviction earlier in the year, while Georgia's Democratic Party chairman resigned last month after being reprimanded by the state Supreme Court.

For Republicans in Maine and elsewhere, there are signs of improvement as more experienced political leaders take over for enthusiastic newcomers who have, in some cases, struggled with fundraising and logistics required to coordinate statewide political organizations.

The Republican National Committee is working to strengthen the state operations as well.

Priebus on Wednesday announced the addition of state-level directors in 12 states: California, Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Their tasks include working with state parties to coordinate campaign efforts, planning GOP events across their states and collecting voter data, according to the RNC, which has more than 125 staffers already spread across the states, with many more hires expected by the end of the year.

"We're building the most expansive field program the GOP has ever seen, and we're doing it earlier than ever before," Priebus said. "Our state directors will play key roles in building a permanent field operation to be successful in elections this year, in 2014, in 2016 and beyond."

The first wave of hires is focused where the party faces high-profile elections in 2013 and 2014. Both Virginia and New Jersey feature gubernatorial contests this fall. And with the U.S. Senate majority at stake, Republicans are eyeing 2014 pickup opportunities in Montana, West Virginia and Louisiana.

In some states where new directors have yet to be hired, acute problems remain.

In Iowa, for example, the state GOP apparatus has become a reflection of the party's bitterly divided factions. Led by followers of libertarian-minded Ron Paul, the state party organization has quarreled with Republican Gov. Terry Branstad and disputed his strategy for state government and party affairs.

The stakes are high in Iowa, where the GOP has an opportunity to win the U.S. Senate seat long occupied by Democrat Tom Harkin, who is not seeking re-election.

In Minnesota, Republicans have been salivating to unseat two Democratic incumbents, Gov. Mark Dayton and Sen. Al Franken. But Republicans there are at their weakest political point in more than 30 years. They hold no major offices, are in the minority of both legislative chambers and haven't won a statewide election since Tim Pawlenty secured a second term as governor in 2006. Their candidate for Senate in 2012 mustered a bare 30 percent of the vote.

The Minnesota GOP has endured leadership shake-ups. Strife between old-guard members and Paul adherents lingers. And the GOP is struggling to get out from under a mountain of debt.

In Maine, Republicans are working to retain the governor's seat, although Gov. Paul LePage is expected to face a challenging re-election in a state that overwhelmingly supported President Barack Obama. Republican Sen. Susan Collins also faces re-election next year, although a serious challenger has yet to emerge.

"The Republican Party in Maine ? and certainly in other states ? is going through a period of redefinition," Bennett said. "I think people are ready to move beyond that and to find common ground within the party."

On July 5th, 2013, the beleaguered, controversial Yonkers PBA President Keith Olson was flushed out; forced to make a statement in defense of himself as well as his two close co-conspirators, those he refers to in his response as ?great friends? - Captain John Mueller of the 4th Precinct, and Detective Sergeant Brian Moran of the Detective Division. Before we dissect Olson?s desperate plea for survival, most people will concur his statement was cold, calculating, replete with outlandish lies and denials. College Attendance Rate Well Above National Average for D207

A study shows that 82 percent Maine Township High School D207?s class of 2012 attending college. Largest number attend Oakton Community College.

By Michelle Martin

About 82 percent of Maine Township High School District 207?s 2012 graduates are enrolled in a two- or four-year college or university, according to a report on StudentTracker data presented at the district?s July school board meeting.

That beats the national average for college enrollment by 14 percent, according to the report from Barbara Dill-Varga, the district?s assistant superintendent for curriculum. What?s more, the report shows a trend of modest increases in college enrollment over the past few years.

While more than half ? 57 percent of the class of 2012 ? enrolled at four-year institutions. The largest number of students, 346, enrolled at Oakton Community College.

The rate of college enrollment is a little higher than Dill-Varga expected before the district signed up for StudentTracker two years ago, although its lower than what the district reported when it relied on graduating seniors to share their plans.

?Then, a student might have told us that they planned to go to a certain college, but come fall, they wouldn?t be enrolled there, and we would never know that,? Dill-Varga explained. ?Circumstances change.?

That could mean that a student decided they couldn?t afford to attend, or they moved or family circumstances changed, she said.

StudentTracker uses data provided by colleges and universities to the National Student Clearinghouse about students who are actually enrolled. It does have a small cost ? a few hundred dollars per school. But it is less than the cost of the time district staff used to spend compiling the old reports, Dill-Varga said, and more accurate and more useful.

It?s even more useful when analyzing the enrollment patterns of classes from several years past, Dill-Varga said, because it?s possible to see whether students who did not enroll in college immediately after graduation ever did. It appears that those who are going to do so show up within about two years of graduation, Dill-Varga said, and whether students who enroll go on to graduate.

Those figures are available for District 207 classes from 2003-2006. In the class of 2005, for example, nearly 55 of all graduates had earned a college degree by 2012.

?This is another measure of success for us,? Dill-Varga said. ?We have always looked at things like ACT scores, but that?s about getting to college. This is about what they do when they get there.?

Mars heist: Red Planet was robbed of most of its atmosphere billions of years ago

Two papers report that Mars?s atmosphere was lost in cataclysmic events some 4 billion years ago, leaving the planet with too thin an atmosphere to support life.

This photo released by NASA shows a view of Mars that was stitched together by images taken by NASA?s Viking Orbiter spacecraft. Two papers published in Science on Friday show that Mars lost much of the atmosphere that could have kept the planet warm and green about 4 billion years ago.

Two separate papers published in the journal?Science provide evidence that Mars?s atmosphere was lost in cataclysmic events some 4 billion years ago, leaving the planet with too thin an atmosphere to support living organisms there. The findings, which show a shift in the proportions of heavy and light isotopes over time, join mounting evidence that the planet once had conditions conducive to life.

?Previous measurements had reported enrichment of heavier isotopes in [hydrogen], [carbon], and noble gases, and as an end-result, models run backward in time indicated an atmosphere on Mars thicker than that of Earth?s,? says Christopher Webster, a scientist at NASA?s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the lead author of one of the studies. ?Our Curiosity measurements are more accurate than previous measurements, so we can better tie our results to the time-scale provided by the meteorite record.?

Using data from Curiosity rover's SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) instruments, scientists found that the heavy isotope carbon-13 is more prevalent in the current Martian atmosphere than it was in the past, relative to the lighter carbon-12, which has one fewer neutron. The same was true for the ratio of argon-36 to heavier isotope argon-38.

The change in proportions from the original material that formed Mars some 4.5 billion years ago indicates a violent and then gradual stripping of mass from the atmosphere?s top.

The loss of atmosphere likely began about 3 to 4 billion years ago, soon after Mars?s birth, said Dr. Webster. A huge impact from a Pluto-sized object, followed by smaller impacts, likely tore at the planet?s atmosphere, pocking the planet with the craters, including the Gale Crater in which Curiosity landed last summer.

Those impacts ruined the plant?s dipole magnetic field, which on our own planet diverts solar wind particles. Over the next few billion years, those particles careened into the atmosphere?s top, pulling more of that protective cover apart, he said.

Scheduled to launch in November, the Mars orbiting?MAVEN probe is expected to fill in gaps in understanding of the current depletion of Mars's atmosphere, as those solar particles continue to thin its uppermost layer.

The new publications corroborate mounting evidence that life could have been possible on the Red Planet ? but that about 3 to 4 billion years ago, the planet changed, becoming an inhospitable place.

?It is a good bet that the thicker atmosphere could have kept parts of the planet warm enough for microbial life to survive for a while,? said Paul Mahaffy of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, and the lead author on the other Science paper.

In March, NASA scientists reported that the first rock that Curiosity drilled into proffered critical, life-supporting elements, including hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon. It also contained clays, which form in water.

Then, this week, scientists at Caltech provided evidence of a delta into which an enormous Mars ocean might have once sloshed. Scientists there proposed that the ocean could have spanned about a third of the planet, feeding rivers and streams that girdled the foreign world.

But those findings are about Mars in the past tense: Curiosity, which has been on Mars for about a year and travelled more than a kilometer, has found no evidence of liquid water on the modern planet.

And NASA scientists report in these most recent papers that the methane levels on Mars are significantly lower than previously thought. In 2009, Earth-based measurements of the Martian atmosphere had found high quantities of methane gas there. Since most methane gas on Earth is produced by living organisms, and since the compound dissipates in just a few hundred years, its presence suggested that something was recently alive ? or was still alive ? and pumping gas on Mars.

Now, measurements taken from Mars? surface show very little methane gas there ? less than about 2 parts-per-billion. Lively Earth has about 1,800 parts-per-billion.?

?The lack of methane in the atmosphere at the very trace levels that SAM can measure is surprising in light of previously published work,? said Dr. Mahaffy, noting that his team plans to continue searching the planet for the gas, in light of the data six years ago.

While scientists believe that the Red Planet could have once been warm and wet, it is still an open debate if life could have developed there before the atmosphere was tugged away, leaving the planet cold and dry.

?A big question that still needs an answer is how long the surface of the planet might have stayed warm and was this long enough for robust microbial life to develop and thrive,? said Mahaffy. ?These are big questions that may take several missions and possibly returned samples or even future explorers on the surface to answer.?

Verizon's three new Droid devices: Thin, long-lasting, and compact

Your gadgets

Droid

Rosa Golijan / NBC News

Verizon and Motorola unveiled the refreshed Droid smartphone line at an event in New York City on Tuesday. The three new devices focus on three different concepts: Thinness, battery life, and compactness.

While introducing the new smartphones, Rick Osterloh, Motorola Mobility's senior vice president of product management, emphasized that all three have significant upgrades over the last generation of Droid devices. He listed off a 24 percent faster CPU, a 100 percent faster GPU, and twice the RAM. All three have 2-megapixel cameras in the front and 10-megapixel cameras in the back. Lovers of Google Now will be happy to find that they can control the virtual assistant by saying "OK, Google Now" and issuing a command. (Yes, the "OK, Google Now" trigger phrase will be familiar to Google Glass fans.) Those who are used to super-high-resolution screens might not be all that excited though: The new Droid devices offer 720p displays. This is a bit disappointing when dealing with the tall Ultra.

The new Droid Ultra will be priced at $199. It will focus on thinness. It's a thin, tall, beast of a phone which will be available in red of black. It has a 1.7 GHz dual-core processor with quad-core graphics, 2 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage. Unlike the MAXX and Mini, the Ultra does not support wireless charging .(Which is not surprising considering that it's only 7.18 millimeters thick.)

The new Droid MAXX will be priced at $299 and focus on battery life. It is 9 percent thinner than last year's Droid MAXX model, measuring in at 8.5 millimeters. It has a 1.7 GHz dual-core processor with quad-core graphics, 2 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of storage. According to its spec sheet, it will handle up to 48 hours of use on a charge.

Droid

Rosa Golijan / NBC News

The Droid Mini is priced at $99 and is "compact without compromise," the folks from Motorola explain. It has a 4.3-inch display and sits in one's hand as comfortably as an iPhone (which will make Android users who favor the smaller footprint quite happy, even if it isn't quite as slender). It has a 1.7 GHz dual-core processor with quad-core graphics 2 GB of RAM, and 16 GB of storage.

Pre-orders begin online on Tuesday and the devices will start shipping on Aug. 20. Early purchasers, those who order one of the new Droid devices before Sept. 30, will receive 6 months of free Google Music Play All Access service. Access to Ingress, a location-based invitation-only game made by the folks in Google's Niantic Labs, is also included (along with the ability to invite 5 friends).

While you're making notes on your calendar, keep in mind that the Moto X, that other new Motorola device, will be officially unveiled on Aug. 1. Leaks suggest that the gadget might just be the mid-rage smartphone to beat and that it might bring a more "pure" Android experience.

Want more tech news or interesting links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on Twitter, subscribing to her Facebook posts, or circling her on Google+.

Help Research Cancer With New Mobile Phone Game GeneGame ...

Cancer Research

A big challenge in cancer research is dealing with the huge volume of data it produces that needs to be analyzed. There?s more data than there are researchers to look at it, so Cancer Research UK is taking a novel approach to sorting through it all. They?ve partnered with mobile game company Guerilla Tea to create a mobile game that lets players break down cancer research data in a fun way.

The game is called GeneGame, and it?s expected to hit app stores by the end of the year. It?s going to build on the products of a ?gamejam? Cancer Research UK held where gamers, scientists, and designers worked to build 12 prototype games that could be used to crunch the data. Players will basically be analyzing gene data, but in a way that?s hopefully more fun than regular, boring gene data analysis.

Citizen science lead for Cancer Research UK, Amy Carton said:

Combining complicated cancer research data and gaming technology in this way has never been done before and it?s certainly no mean feat but we?re working with the best scientific and technology brains in the business, we?re ready for the challenge and believe the results will have global impact and speed up research.

It?s a similar strategy to Folding@home, which was a Stanford University project that let people use their personal computers and PlayStation 3 systems to solve protein folding problems when the systems weren?t being used for other things. It was a big success with more than 15 million users logging over 100 million hours, and that was just on the PlayStation version.

A key difference is that Folding@home used those systems passively. When you weren?t using your computer to read our site or look at cat videos Folding@home did some calculations. GeneGame will be active, because the data processing itself is gamified. That means to have players analyze any date, they have to be playing the game. It?s a beautiful idea, but I think the success of the project will hinge heavily on how fun the game itself is.

If it?s fun and something people want to play a lot just for the sake of playing the game, then the community of gamers will contribute more data processing to the cause. If the game isn?t that enjoyable to play, people might play it in their downtime to do a good deed and help cancer research, but probably not as much.

Maybe just figure out a way to make Candy Crush do cancer research?

Attacks kill 13 in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Bombings and shootings in Iraq killed 13 people on Sunday, as the death toll from a coordinated wave of late-night car bombings and other attacks the day before jumped past 70, authorities said.

The explosions were the latest in a relentless surge in bloodshed that has rocked Iraq since the start of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan on July 10. They follow months of surging violence across the country that is raising fears of a return to the widespread sectarian killing that pushed the country to the brink of civil war after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

The deadliest of Sunday's attacks came in the afternoon, when gunmen attacked a checkpoint manned by the Kurdish security forces known as peshmerga near Kirkuk, killing five peshmerga fighters.

The oil-rich city of Kirkuk is 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad.

Saturday night's blasts went off after the sundown "iftar" meal that breaks the daily Ramadan fast. Streets during the holy month are often filled with people out shopping and relaxing in cafes in the evenings, suggesting the attackers aimed to hit as many civilians as possible.

"What crime have those innocent people committed?" asked Kadim Mohsen, who was surveying the damage in the central neighborhood of Karrada. Several storefronts were wrecked by the force of an explosion there, and broken watermelons and sandals littered the street.

"Who will compensate owners of those shops?" he asked. "We see explosions every day. We blame the army and police."

As the scale of the carnage became clearer early Sunday, police reported that a total of 12 car bombs went off in Baghdad late Saturday. They said the blasts and a shooting in the same area as one of the explosions killed 57, including some who died in the hospital overnight. More than 125 were reported wounded.

Those attacks and others around Iraq on Saturday killed a total of 71, according to police and hospital officials.

That made for the country's deadliest day since May 17, when a series of explosions in Sunni areas in and around Baghdad killed at least 76 people.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the latest attacks, although coordinated bombings against Shiites are a favorite tactic of al-Qaida's Iraq branch.

Parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi urged security forces not to give up their fight against violent extremists, while demanding that they do more to prevent security breaches. Al-Nujaifi is a Sunni who is frequently critical of the Shiite prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki.

"We strongly condemn the evil and criminal attacks that targeted our people," he said. "These attacks are part of heinous efforts that aim to ignite unrest and sectarian strife."

Al-Maliki ordered a shake-up among the military brass in May in the wake of a series of deadly attacks, but the move appears to have done little to slow the pace of the killing.

The violence raged on Sunday.

In addition to the attack in Kirkuk, police said a bomb exploded in a fish market in the town of Taji, 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Baghdad. Police and hospital officials said that blast killed four and wounded 15.

Another bomb exploded outside the house of an anti-al-Qaida Sunni militia leader in the town of Basmaiya, killing two and wounding four. The town is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of the Iraqi capital.

Also, gunmen sprayed a security checkpoint in the restive city of Mosul in the north, killing two soldiers.

The officials provided details of the attacks and casualties on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information to reporters.

More than 450 people have been killed so far this month, including at least 284 since Ramadan began, according to an Associated Press count.

Pozercise_Your_World_Cover_for_Kindle

I have spoken on the subject, and taught on the subject of purpose for as long as I can remember.? I first starting speaking publicly at 18 years of age, and I noticed speaking to people about their purpose in life is my passion.

Adrienne Manson ? 21 July 2013

The Back Flap

Pozercise your world is the beginning of changing your world from the inside out!? Create the life you always dreamed.? Use pozercise to boost your self-confidence.

About the book

What is the book about?

Pozercise is a book of positive affirmations to be used by individuals in reversing their negative thought pattern into a positive way of thinking.? The book can also be used for journaling. ?Each page has an affirmation, and the reader can reflect and use the affirmations to center their thoughts and write what area of their life they are focusing on to realign.

When did you start writing the book?

I first started writing the affirmations, and inspirational quotes on my Facebook page, as I started more affirmations began to flood my thoughts to share with more people.

How long did it take you to write it?

Believe it or not it only took 2 months to write the book.? My collection of writing was massive due to my history of writing to earn online for the past 5 years.

Where did you get the idea from?

The idea came to me as I was working.? It started out as an idea for an exercise video, to encourage people to live a more active and healthy lifestyle.? The idea spun into a book, and Life Coaching practice.? For years I have loved coaching, and am passionate about helping others find their purpose and passion in life.? I have spoken on the subject, and taught on the subject of purpose for as long as I can remember.? I first starting speaking publicly at 18 years of age, and I noticed speaking to people about their purpose in life is my passion.

Were there any parts of the book where you struggled?

No, just the opposite the more I write, the more I want to write even more.

What came easily?

The title, I actually had the title of the book before the book was written.? I thought I was going to produce the exercise video, which could still happen, but it is on hold for right now.

Are your characters entirely fictitious or have you borrowed from real world people you know?

Pozercise Your World only has one character, and that?s the reader.

We all know how important it is for writers to read. Are there any particular authors that have influenced how you write and, if so, how have they influenced you?

I love the writing of Dr. Wayne Dyer his writing is inspiration and l love his books.

Do you have a target reader?

My target audience is small business owners, and individuals who really want to reinvent their life.? I am a firm believer that if a person is not satisfied with their life they can change it, by reinventing it.

About Writing

Do you have a writing process? If so can you please describe it?

Yes, I follow the same process, and/or pattern for my writing, and for the classes I take. I love to write early in the morning.? Every morning I write, at times as early as 6:00 a.m.

Do you outline? If so, do you do so extensively or just chapter headings and a couple of sentences?

Not for this particular book I did not have an outline.

Do you edit as you go or wait until you?ve finished?

Typically when I write fiction novels, I write first and edit last.? After I edit I rewrite, and edit again.

Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what gets the fingers tapping?

No, I love to work, and write in the peace and quiet.

About Publishing

Did you submit your work to Agents?

Yes, I knew it would be difficult, but I submitted anyway.?? When I first started writing books many years ago I traveled the path of trying to find an agent.? I wrote query letters, called agents only to receive a rejection letter.? ?Some agents stated they liked the story, but it was not their genre.

What made you decide to go Indie, whether self-publishing or with an indie publisher? Was it a particular event or a gradual process?

I had experience with self-publishing some years ago, and was successful.

Did you get your book cover professionally done or did you do it yourself?

Fortunately I know someone who enjoys graphic design, and I was glad his company designed the cover.? The cover has received a positive reaction, and readers say they just love it!

Do you have a marketing plan for the book or are you just winging it?

A marketing plan is the most important part of being successful with self-publishing. I read interviews of other authors who experienced success with self-publishing, and decided I am going to do what they did, and more.

Any advice that you would like to give to other newbies considering becoming Indie authors?

Keep working on your marketing plan, your marketing plan is half the battle.? If you have a well- executed marketing plan the sales will come.
