DaVita settles in Federal Way office and plans to add jobs

Kidney dialysis company DaVita Healthcare Partners Inc. moved its accounting and payroll operations to Federal Way ? along with 350 jobs and room to grow.

Based in Denver, DaVita is a publicly-traded Fortune 500 company (NYSE:DVA) that claims billionaire investor Warren Buffett as its largest shareholder. Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. owns 15.6 million shares (about 15 percent) of DaVita stock, according to USA Today. DaVita reported $8.186 billion in revenue in 2012.

DaVita serves 160,000 patients at nearly 2,000 kidney dialysis clinics across the U.S. and in nine other nations. Federal Way is already home to a 24-seat dialysis clinic at 1015 S. 348th St.

Located in a remodeled building on the Weyerhaeuser campus, the Federal Way accounting office plans to add at least 50 more jobs in the near future to help handle the entire company's finances.

The Federal Way office measures about 125,000 square feet. The site was selected because of its proximity to Tacoma, therefore minimizing disruption to employees' commutes.

"We were running out of space in downtown Tacoma," said Lin Whatcott, senior director for corporate accounting, on the move to Federal Way in April. "It was fortunate we found this big building that was sitting empty."

Jim Hilger, DaVita's chief accounting officer, told The Mirror last fall that one perk of moving a portion of employees to Federal Way is the lack of a Business and Occupation (B&O) tax. About 550 employees remain at the downtown Tacoma office.

Employees hail from King and Pierce counties. The Federal Way office presents a vibrant atmosphere filled with reminders of the company's core values for service.

One of those values is reflected in the name of the company itself: DaVita means "giving life" in Italian.

DaVita employees also receive permission to spend up to eight paid hours a year on community service projects. In one local example, a team from the tax department helped package school supplies for Federal Way-based World Vision.

About kidney dialysis

Patients suffering from kidney failure either need a transplant or dialysis to stay alive. With kidney dialysis, a machine removes and filters waste from the blood and body. Patients typically undergo dialysis three days a week for an average of four hours per session. Unless they find a kidney transplant, the patients must endure dialysis for life.

DaVita's Federal Way dialysis center serves 146 patients. Of those patients, about 26 self-administer their treatment at home, according to David Natali, regional operations director. Dialysis patients often have other health complications in addition to kidney failure. Life expectancy for dialysis patients is typically seven to 10 years.

Phil Davis eats a lot of shots, pulls out controversial decision victory over Lyoto Machida

Judging controversies seem to follow the UFC everywhere it goes, but Saturday's victory by Phil Davis over former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, raised more than a few eyebrows.

After the second round of the three-round bout, Davis' corner urged him to go hard, believing it would be difficult to beat Machida, a Brazilian, by decision in Brazil.

But though Machida seemed to control the third round, it didn't matter. Davis won by scores of 29-28 on all three judges' cards and won a unanimous decision over the division's No. 1 contender.

Sal D'Amato and Rick Winter each gave Rounds 1 and 2 to Davis and Round 3 to Machida. Chris Watts gave Round 1 to Machida and Rounds 2 and 3 to Davis. Cagewriter had it 30-27 for Machida, giving him all three rounds.

Machida seemed shocked when the call went against him.

"I really don't know what they are judging," Machida said in the cage. "Just listen to the crowd. They're telling you what is happening."

UFC president Dana White was shocked, too.

In a telephone interview with Cagewriter once the show ended, White said he was not pleased with the way Machida fought.

"Machida definitely won that fight, definitely," White told Yahoo! Sports. "But that's his fault. He knows MMA judging sucks. It's terrible, it's [expletive], but he went out there and let him do it. I can't remember whether it was the first or the second, but Machida had that combination where he threw all those punches and ran across the cage and ended with that knee. That's when he's really good. But he wants to stay back and be a counter puncher and wait and fight cautiously.

"He's got the abilities, but he just doesn't bring it. He loves the counter and he got taken down at the end of both rounds."

Davis took Machida down near the end of each of the first two rounds, but Machida seemed to control the pace of the fight and stuffed numerous takedowns. Fight Metric gave Machida a 17-16 edge in significant strikes landed.

Davis, who was ranked seventh by the UFC prior to the fight, was ecstatic.

"The late takedowns help, but that's part of my strategy," Davis said. "I get takedowns and work all the time. It's part of what I do."

Machida said he had an injured foot that hampered him a bit, but he couldn't imagine how he lost.

"I believe Phil was not looking to attack, was not going forward and was trying to score points at the end of rounds," Machida said. "But this is not a wrestling match, this is MMA, and I think that the judges need to be more attentive to details. They need to look for who is going forward the most. By the end of the fight he was hurt and bleeding, I managed to land several strikes. I had strained my foot 10 days ago and I felt it a little bit at some point, but other than that I wasn't thrown by his game plan at all."

McConnell, Senate challengers share stage in Ky.

(AP) ? Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell largely ignored his challengers at Kentucky's premier political showdown Saturday, aiming his criticism instead at President Barack Obama while touting his GOP leadership role.

His Democratic rival in the 2014 race, Alison Lundergan Grimes, and McConnell's GOP challenger went on the attack as they shared the stage with Kentucky's longest-serving senator at the annual Fancy Farm picnic in western Kentucky. It was the first joint appearance by the three, though they have been trading jabs for weeks in speeches and TV ads.

Grimes, Kentucky's secretary of state, portrayed McConnell as the chief Republican obstructionist and made her case for a change.

"If doctors told Sen. McConnell he has a kidney stone, he'd refuse to pass it," said Grimes, drawing cheers from her supporters and jeers from McConnell's at the raucous event.

Louisville businessman Matt Bevin, trying to capitalize on tea party influence in the GOP, declared that he would defeat McConnell in the primary election next May.

"I don't intend to run to the right of Mitch McConnell," said Bevin, a political newcomer. "I don't intend to run to the left of Mitch McConnell. I intend to run straight over the top of Mitch McConnell."

By the time he made the bold declaration, McConnell had left the stage. Bevin criticized McConnell for leaving the event early, starting a chant with the crowd: "Where's Mitch? Where's Mitch? Where's Mitch?" Then adding: "The people of Kentucky have been wondering that for quite a while now."

The stump speeches drew a large crowd of sign-waving, chanting partisans, signaling the fervor for a race that won't ultimately be decided until November 2014.

McConnell tried to score political points by criticizing Obama, who has never been popular in Kentucky. Republicans are trying to tie Grimes to Obama, and some Republicans in the crowd had signs that showed pictures of Obama on one side and Grimes on the other.

McConnell said the federal health-care law championed by Obama has been a "disaster for America," and he criticized the Democratic president for his administration's policies that he said are hurting Kentucky's coal industry. Kentucky is one of the nation's leading coal producers.

"I fought them every step of the way," said McConnell, who's making a bid for a sixth term.

Turning to a local issue, McConnell said that he ? along with fellow U.S. Sen. Rand Paul and U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield ? forced the government to reverse its decision to halt fishing below the dam of a popular waterway in the area. Obama recently signed a bill imposing a two-year moratorium on barriers to prevent fishing in the tailwaters near dams along the Cumberland and its tributaries.

"You can't get any of those things done from the back bench," McConnell said, in the only criticism that appeared to be directed at his challengers.

"We're not just deciding who represents Kentucky in the Senate," McConnell added. "We're going to be deciding who runs the Senate."

Grimes said the GOP stands for "gridlock, obstruction and partisan," and said McConnell has been a key player in pursuing the strategy.

"There's a disease of dysfunction in Washington D.C., and after 30 years, Sen. McConnell is at the center of it," she said.

Grimes accused McConnell of voting against the interests of workers, women and retirees.

The Senate race is expected to shatter fund-raising records in Kentucky. It's unclear whether Bevin will have the campaign funds to mount a strong primary challenge to McConnell, who at last count had raised more than $15 million. Bevin refused Saturday to say how much of his own cash he will invest in the race, or how much has put in already. The campaign has been running a TV ad since he announced his candidacy last month.

The setting for Saturday's showdown was the shaded grounds of St. Jerome Catholic Church in the tiny western Kentucky community of Fancy Farm where people started showing up on Friday. It's an annual rite that dates back more than a century. By mid-day Saturday, hundreds of people, many waving placards, had gathered in and around an outdoor pavilion.

The raucous event ? a holdover from the days before television, when politicians had to seek out crowds to solicit votes ? takes on the aura of a sporting event, with spectators shouting themselves hoarse heckling some speakers and cheering others, depending on their philosophies.

Duck football facility

Submit a letter

Post at My Oregon, the Oregonian's online community opinion hub. As a former University of Oregon spokesperson, I still marvel at how posh the university's athletic facilities were, even in comparison to some of the ooshest Fortune 500 corporate offices I have worked in during my career.

David Sarasohn is correct when he implies that Phil Knight, or any other university donor, can direct their gifts in any way they want ("University of Oregon opens its pigskin palace: 200 wiseguy words," OregonLive.com, Aug. 2). If they want to help build pigskin palaces, fine. If they want to help build libraries and law schools (as Knight has done at UO), that is great too.

And if the people and businesses of Oregon really want all of the non-athletic university facilities and programs at the University of Oregon to compete in the same posh and reputation factor as those of athletics, there are several solutions. One is to start demanding that the state of Oregon fund the university at levels more fitting of world-class universities. Another is to make the private contributions to the university that would help, for instance, the geography department compete in the Rose Bowl of geography.

Because palaces -- pigskin, geographic or otherwise -- have to be paid for by somebody.

Faith-based outreach

Sara Hottman's article "Expanding outreach to those in need" (Portland Community News section, July 24) provides timely Catholic Church good news.

St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church's 30-year history of providing safety-net services to the poorest of the poor among us, along with a smiling, personable Pope Francis, shine a positive light on faith-based ministries.

On any given night of the year, many hungry and homeless Oregonians are fed and sheltered by faith-based organizations. According to the Oregon Food Bank, 72 percent of OFB partner organizations that provide emergency food services in Multnomah County are faith-based.

All Oregonians can be proud of this good news.

Springwater support

It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon. I had just begun my first Springwater Trail ride on my two-week-old bicycle when, a mile and a half from Gresham, I found myself face town on the asphalt.

As I was assessing the damage to my body and freaking out about my new bike, along came a young couple and their little girl. They offered baby wipes to clean my wounds, mechanical support to get my bike back on the road and chocolate to cheer my spirit.

At the time, I might have spent too much time whining about my bike and not enough expressing how appreciative I am. As I try to look at the positive side of this experience, this young couple is at the top of my list.

Crisis At Apple's Factory Watchdog

WASHINGTON -- The industry-backed nonprofit group that monitors plants for Apple, Nestle and other major brands has run into financial trouble, having notified its staff that their pay would be cut by at least 20 percent for the year and an overseas bureau would be shuttered, according to emails reviewed by HuffPost.

An audit of the Fair Labor Association, which garnered international attention last year for its monitoring of Apple's Foxconn facilities, found that the group spent more than $2 million over its budget last year, according to an email to staffers from Kathryn Higgins, chair of the group's board. Such an overrun would seem massive for the nonprofit; its total revenues were $5.2 million in 2011, the most recent year for which tax data is available.

The world's largest apparel makers and retailers have come to rely upon industry-backed programs like the FLA to monitor working standards in countries where labor abuses are common. The cutbacks now in motion could hurt the group's ability to supervise the corporate supply chains currently on its roster, according to the non-profit's employees.

In an email to HuffPost, an FLA spokeswoman said last year's deficit was offset by reserves. "The budget for this year is now in balance and we are committed to remaining in balance going forward," she said.

FLA leaders attributed much of the cost overruns to the development of a new monitoring system, known as its "Sustainable Compliance" methodology. The group said it has hired more assessors and spent significantly more time and money auditing facilities, interviewing workers and traveling abroad.

"[T]he costs turned out to be greater than we ever anticipated," the spokeswoman said.

In July, FLA took the step of slashing salaries for staff members by 20 percent for the rest of the year and requiring non-salaried workers to take one unpaid furlough day each week through December. Workers deemed members of "the training team" saw their pay cut by a whopping 50 percent, as did the group's president and its executive director. The association's office in Istanbul, one of three overseas, was closed for good.

The group said that the salary cuts would be in place through the end of the year, but they expect to be "back to full strength next year."

"You know the reasons for the difficult financial situation we are in," Auret van Heerden, the group's president, said in an email to staff co-written in July with Jorge Perez-Lopez, the executive director. "The organization grew too fast and tried to do too many things. We made some important and necessary programmatic changes but their financial implications were not fully understood. But the reality is that we failed to achieve the fiscal and managerial discipline and control necessary to avoid the situation we face today.

"We very much regret the disruption to your lives, families and work," they added.

The group announced last week that van Heerden would be stepping down from his post at the end of this year. A South African native, van Heerden has spent the last 12 years at the Fair Labor Association. Before that, he worked for the International Labour Organization, the United Nations' human and labor rights watchdog.

According to the group's tax documents filed for 2011, van Heerden's compensation for the year was $279,500, while Perez-Lopez's was $193,764.

Founded in 1999, the FLA was established partly in response to a series of embarrassing sweatshop scandals in the 1990s. Retail leaders and politicians, particularly President Bill Clinton, hoped an industry-backed group could help improve working standards in growing manufacturing hubs like China and Bangladesh. Participating brands now include Adidas, H&M, Nike, New Balance and Patagonia, among others, according to the group's website.

Last year Nestle became the first food company to join the FLA, and the nonprofit performed an investigation into the company's cocoa supply chain in Africa shortly thereafter. The group carried out an audit of Apple's Foxconn facilities the same year, finding that the factories needed to reduce work hours and improve worker participation in unions.

The group has risen to international prominence under van Heerden, just as criticism has mounted from labor activists about the FLA's model of workplace monitoring. The organization receives much of its funding through the very corporate members whose overseas workplaces it's tasked with investigating.

This corporate self-monitoring serves as some of the only scrutiny of factory labor practices in countries with poor government oversight, but skeptics argue the model is hampered by conflicts of interest and fails to curb labor abuses adequately. Voluntary compliance programs like FLA, critics say, can't substitute for the sort of legally binding safety agreement signed by mostly European retailers in the wake of the Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh, which claimed more than 1,120 lives this spring.

The irony of a workplace watchdog suddenly enforcing massive pay cuts on its staff hasn't escaped the notice of FLA employees. In a July 11 letter to board members signed by 30 employees, staffers voiced their frustration at the cuts to their already-modest NGO salaries, calling the reductions a "devastating blow to our livelihoods, as most of us are currently receiving salaries that are below the median cost-of-living for the cities in which we live."

Many of the workers have apparently taken the cutback news as all but a layoff notice. "Most of us may have no choice but to seek employment elsewhere," they wrote.

But the workers also voiced concern that they'd have limited influence on the nonprofit's turnaround plan. Involving employees in such decision-making, they noted, is an "integral pillar" to the very worker-centric philosophy that FLA means to espouse through its monitoring duties.

"As an organization that prides itself on 'protecting workers' rights worldwide,'" they wrote, "we hope that the Board will provide the leadership necessary to ensure that the same protections FLA advocates are offered to its own employees."

The FLA spokeswoman said they had developed an employee committee to give workers a voice during the overhaul. "All members of the Board of Directors and staff have been invited in the effort [to] ensure that FLA comes out of this situation stronger and even more effective than before," she said.

According to a press release last week on van Heerden's stepping down, the FLA's board had planned to begin the process of choosing a successor at its annual meeting this week. As an email to staff indicated, the board meeting was originally slated to happen in China in mid-June. It was later rescheduled for Washington, D.C., in late July, presumably due to budget constraints.

?Importance of therapeutic patient education in icthyosis: results of a prospective single reference center study (Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases)? Tweet

Background: Ichthyoses are a heterogeneous group of rare genodermatoses. Patients and their families face difficulties related to daily care and management that may be aggravated by social isolation.ObjectivesTo evaluate the impact of therapeutic educational programs in improving the knowledge of ichthyosis patients, and their relatives, about their disease.Patients and methods: We organized a two sessions-program of `know-how` dedicated to the overall management of ichthyoses. These sessions were conducted based on a tool specifically designed for the study, which addressed our various areas of expertise through a collective game. The participants (patients and their parents and siblings) were divided into groups, and the questions were tailored according to the participants` age. The program was conceived as a knowledge reinforcement program that took place during a weekend of education and rest, organized away from healthcare structures. Our aim was to facilitate the program in a neutral place to encourage respite care and to ensure the availability of a multidisciplinary healthcare team. Results: After the reinforcement session, children aged from 6 to 12 years and their families acquired the targeted know-how and social skills. Conclusion: Benefits of TPE in the management of ichthyoses are the following: (1) the trust between patients their families and the caregivers was strengthened; (2) the context of the program encouraged self-expression, answered questions and provided mutual aid; and (3) the more self-sufficient families could better manage emergencies.

Leaked docs give new insight into NSA's searches

(AP) ? Documents published by the Guardian newspaper are providing new insight into the National Security Agency's surveillance of world data, giving an over-the-shoulder look at the programs and techniques U.S. intelligence analysts use to exploit the hundreds of billions of records they gather each year.

Dozens of training slides published Wednesday divulge details about XKeyscore, one of a family of NSA programs that leaker Edward Snowden says has given America the ability to spy on "the vast majority of human communications."

Some of the slides appear to carry screenshots showing what analysts would see as they trawled the intercepted conversations, including sample search queries such as "Show me all encrypted word documents from Iran" or "Show me all the word documents that reference Osama Bin Laden."

In an indication of the program's scope, one slide says that XKeyscore has led to the capture of more than 300 terrorists. In a statement, the NSA said that figure only included captures up to the year 2008, and pushed back against any suggestion of illegal or arbitrary collection of data.

"These types of programs allow us to collect the information that enables us to perform our missions successfully ? to defend the nation and to protect U.S. and allied troops abroad," the statement said.

How and from where the program draws its data isn't completely clear, but one slide said XKeyscore was supported by 700 servers and 150 sites across the globe. Another slide seemed to show the program drawing data from a body codenamed SSO ? an apparent reference to the NSA's Special Source Operations, which previous Guardian articles have described as capturing large numbers of communications between the United States and other countries.

The volume of data available to analysts through XKeyscore appears to be vast. The Guardian quoted one slide as saying that nearly 42 billion records had been captured by the system during a one-month period in 2012 ? a rate of half a trillion records every year. So much content was being collected, the newspaper said, that it could only be stored for short periods of time ? generally just a few days.

"At some sites, the amount of data we receive per day (20+ terabytes) can only be stored for as little as 24 hours," the Guardian quoted one document as saying.

In a message forwarded to The Associated Press by Guardian spokesman Gennady Kolker, journalist Glenn Greenwald said the article about XKeyscore drew on half a dozen documents supplied to him by Snowden in Hong Kong. One of them ? a 32-page overview of the program ? was published in its entirety, albeit with several pages redacted.

The documents are the first to have been published in the Guardian since Snowden, who remains stuck at a Moscow airport, applied for temporary asylum in Russia on July 16.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he'd be inclined to accept on condition that Snowden agreed not to hurt U.S. interests ? implying that the American would have to stop leaking secrets. But Snowden's Russian lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, said Wednesday that the material for the article was provided long before Snowden promised to stop leaking.

"He warned me that he had already sent to the press an array of revealing information and secret documents and, unfortunately, could not stop its publication," Kucherena was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.

Dallas sues brother, mom of NBA star Chris Bosh to stop hosting illegal parties at vacant warehouse

Updated today at 4:25 PM

DALLAS ?? Dallas city attorneys have filed an injunction against NBA player Chris Bosh?s younger brother to get him to stop hosting illegal parties at his mother?s vacant Cedars area warehouse like the one that police allege?led to a chaotic outburst of fights and gunfire last weekend.?

The five-story structure at S. 1401 Ervay St. was to be the location of the so-called #NotANormalParty on Saturday night, which promoters promised would have a different party on each of the floors. There was the ?fun and wild party? on the first floor, complete with a bounce house, mud wrestling, mechanical bull ride and a wet T-shirt contest.?

The second floor would?ve been covered with foam. The third, coined the ?Trippy/iHate Bein Sober floor? apparently said attendees ?must take shot to enter.? Above that was the ?Rave/Glow Party? and then the anticlimactically named ?club? on the fifth floor.?

That planning was all for naught: Dallas police shut down the event as attendees lined Ervay. In a YouTube video, a man purporting to be the organizer bragged, ?We still had 1,006 people in line, waiting to pay to get in.??

Promoters tried to move the party to a salon in the 2500 block of Royal Lane in North Dallas, but the owner ordered everyone out when the mass of people arrived. Shortly after midnight, the scene grew chaotic ?? police say four people were shot at a McDonald's a block east and fights broke out at a nearby gas station.?

The city was already fed up with the parties there. The injunction, first obtained by The Dallas Morning News, was filed a day prior in a Dallas County District Court against Joel Bosh and his mother Freida Bosh. According to the city, ?the property is unsafe for human use or occupation because it has various health and safety violations.??

?Despite these dangerous conditions being present on the Property, Mr. Bosh continues to occupy the Property,? the document reads.?

Promoters have hosted parties at the warehouse since at least 2011, when someone threw a watch party during the NBA Finals that pitted the Dallas Mavericks against hometown boy Chris Bosh and his Miami Heat. On New Years Eve of 2012, a promotion group named 5 Star Lifestylin ENT held a two-story party there with, according to the Facebook event posting, a capacity of at least 500.?

The lawsuit alleges Joel Bosh is behind these: ?Mr. Bosh promotes or contracts with others to promote nightclub type special events on the Property,? it says.?

On January 25, 2011, city inspectors denied the venue a certificate of occupancy after it ?failed every category of safety code, including electrical, plumbing, mechanical and structural inspections.? The lawsuit says the city has issued ?numerous notices? and contacted the owner to ask them to stop.?

The lawsuit threatens to fine Freida and Joel Bosh $1,000 for each day there?s a party at 1401 S. Ervay going forward. The city says it?s tried to deliver the injunction to Bosh?s ?agent and representative? Larenzo Maxfield and hasn?t received a response.? This, ?despite two voicemails left on his cell phone.? News 8 has also left a voicemail with Maxfield seeking comment.?

Nevertheless, Dallas police have been called to the location 10 times since 2009. A sampling of police reports show a slew of assaults there. In the wee hours of January 1, a man allegedly punched his significant other in the face when she tried to block the exit, according to a police report. ?

Joel Bosh himself was brutally beaten on July 19, 2012 ?? a police report shows Bosh?s assailant hit him in the jaw and ribs while donning gloves ?possibly with metal knuckles on them.? The battered Bosh checked into the emergency room that night.?

But long before the building hosted events like 2012?s ?Twerk Fest,? 1401 S. Ervay St. was home to the Hughes Brothers Manufacturing Company, which produced sweet smelling ice cream cones.?

Now, the commercial property lies dormant; or the city says it should, anyway. Still, the county values the property at $2,286,880. Freida Bosh is listed as its sole owner.?She has not responded to a request for comment.?

CBS Sports: SEC Expert Predictions

CBSSports.com's panel of experts break down what to expect in the SEC during the 2013 season:

Offensive Player of the Year: AJ McCarron, QB, Alabama. Nation's most efficient passer with 30 TD and only 3 INT last season. Has the best set of receivers in Alabama history.

Defensive Player of the year: Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina. One of the best athletes to ever play the position. DE Lorenzo Ward says Clowney cannot be blocked when he doesn't want to be blocked.

Top Newcomer: Robert Nkemdiche, DE, Ole Miss: The nation's No. 1 recruit last season has a big impact in his first season in college ball.

Coach of the Year: Steve Spurrier, South Carolina. The Head Ball coach finally has a schedule with no LSU or Alabama. He has beaten Georgia three straight years.

Next coordinator to become a head coach: Kirby Smart, DC, Alabama. It's just matter of finding a job good enough for him to leave the comforts of Tuscaloosa. He could have gone to Auburn last season.

Next head coach to become a coordinator: Gary Pinkel, Missouri. It would not be fair because he needs time to recruit linemen to play at the SEC level. But he's the closest thing the SEC has to a coach on the hot seat.

Most intriguing conference game: Alabama at Texas A&M, Sept. 14. Winner has the inside track to the SEC West championship and probably a spot in the BCS title game.

Most intriguing non-conference game: Georgia at Clemson, Aug. 31. Both teams in preseason Top 10. Two of the most productive quarterbacks (Aaron Murray, Tajh Boyd) in college football. The two campuses are only 90 miles apart.

Bold conference prediction: Georgia QB Aaron Murray will finish the season as the SEC's all-time leading passer but be the third team All-SEC quarterback behind AJ McCarron and Johnny Manziel.

Offensive Player of the Year: Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia. In some sense, Dawgs are going to have to outscore people to win. Soon-to-be all-time SEC passer can handle it.

Defensive Player of the Year: Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina. Are you kidding? Asked how he would defend himself, JC said, "You got to grab and hold on."

Top Newcomer: Laquon Treadwell, WR Ole Miss. Nation's top receiver fits perfectly in Hugh Freeze's offense. The next Julio Jones?

Coach of the Year: Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M. Two years ago he was at Houston. Two years into the SEC, he has the returning Heisman Trophy winner.

Next coordinator to become a head coach: Kirby Smart, Alabama. Thought he'd be gone by now. Just waiting for the right job.

Next head coach to become a coordinator: Gary Pinkel, Missouri. With four new coaches, not many coaches on the hot seat. If Pinkel doesn't win seven, though ...

Most intriguing conference game: Alabama at Texas A&M, Sept. 14. The loser can still play for the national championship.

Most intriguing non-conference game: Georgia at Clemson, Aug. 31. The winner stays in the national title hunt for weeks to come.

Bold conference prediction: A team from the SEC West will win the national championship, but it won't be Alabama. Texas A&M going all-in for Sept. 14 game with the Tide.

Offensive Player of the Year: Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M: Doubt he wins a second Heisman in a row, but still expect a huge year from him now that's gotten stronger and more seasoning

Defensive Player of the Year: Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina: Most dominant defender we've seen in more than a generation. Even double-teams don't stop him.

Top Newcomer: DeMarcus Robinson, WR, Florida: Gators desperately need a play-making WR to step up and the 6-2, 200-pound freshman has coaches fired up.

Coach of the Year: Nick Saban. If anyone can pull off winning three titles in a row, it's Mr. Process.

Next coordinator to become a head coach: Bama OC Doug Nussmeier. His colleague Kirby Smart had chances and passed em up. Not sure Nuss will pass them up this winter.

Next head coach to become a coordinator: Closest thing to a hot seat in SEC is Gary Pinkel. He won a ton of games at a place not used to winning but that was before the SEC. He needs to get the Tigers to a bowl game just to be safe.

Most intriguing conference game: Alabama at Texas A&M, Sept. 14.

Most intriguing non-conference game: Georgia at Clemson, Aug. 31.

Bold conference prediction: In 2013, for the first time ever, a defensive lineman will win the Heisman. Jadeveon Clowney is that special and the era of social media and 24-hour sports news cycle will help keep people buzzing about him.

Offensive Player of the Year: Todd Gurley, RB, Georgia. While the trio of star SEC quarterbacks (McCarron, Manziel, Murray) garner the attention, Gurley will quietly outperform them by eclipsing his 1,385 yards and 17 touchdowns from his freshman year. The league's best returning running back (though Alabama's T.J. Yeldon might disagree) is in a system designed to showcase him and will carry Georgia to at least one top-five win in SEC play.

Defensive Player of the Year: C.J. Mosley, LB, Alabama. No doubt Jadeveon Clowney is the league's most dominant defensive player, but Mosley might be the most versatile -- or the most impactful. He has ideal range, lifts the play of teammates and, according to a team source, is the most instinctual linebacker Saban's had at Alabama. That's saying something.

Top Newcomer: Ricky Seals-Jones, WR, Texas A&M. If defenses double-cover Mike Evans, quarterback Johnny Manziel will look to Seals-Jones, arguably the most athletic wideout on the Aggies roster. The coveted recruit from the 2013 class is explosive for his size (6-5, 230)

Coach of the Year: South Carolina's Steve Spurrier. Despite back-to-back seasons of 10 or more wins, Spurrier is still waiting to do one thing at South Carolina: Win an SEC title. With a manageable schedule and plenty of talent at several key spots, he might do just that.

Next coordinator to become a head coach: Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart. Smart can have a job any offseason he wants it, but he's been selective and appears to be waiting on the perfect SEC job (Saban's successor, perhaps?). If Smart doesn't bolt, Georgia's defensive coordinator Todd Grantham or Florida offensive coordinator Brent Pease could be next.

Next head coach to become a coordinator: Missouri's Gary Pinkel. In a relatively slow offseason for hot seats in the league, Pinkel's is lukewarm at best. Two straight sub-.500 seasons to start off SEC membership wouldn't exactly land Pinkel an extension. Perhaps better health can push the Tigers above an injury-riddled 2012.

Most intriguing conference game: Alabama at Texas A&M, Sept. 14. This game is so hyped, it's hard to look anywhere else. Manziel and McCarron. Saban and Sumlin. Manning camp and the alarm clock. Don't expect a route in this one. Manziel's still a potential matchup problem for Bama up front because of his mobility.

Most intriguing non-conference game: Georgia at Clemson, Aug. 31. Clemson is looking to improve the ACC's 4-11 record against the SEC since 2011. Its explosive offensive attack will stretch a Bulldogs defense that replaces several starters.

Bold conference prediction: Why isn't Les Miles getting the benefit of the doubt for being able to replace 11 early NFL draft defections when Nick Saban most certainly would? The Tigers will usurp the SEC West when no one's expecting it, but in the end Steve Spurrier will get his first SEC title in Columbia.

* - Conference champion.

Samsung caught boosting benchmark performance numbers on Exynos devices

Samsung caught

Benchmarks often catch the ire of critics because their scores don't necessarily reflect real-world experience, and it appears that some Samsung devices aren't helping that reputation out at all. Our friends at Anandtech started sifting through data for two Exynos octacore variants of the Galaxy S 4, and discovered multiple benchmarks that appear to run those devices at higher CPU and GPU clock speeds than they normally run. Some of the apps included in the report are GLBench 2.5.1, AnTuTu, Quadrant and Linpack. Coincidentally, the site also found code within the GS4 that indicates the existence of a program called "BenchmarkBooster," which is responsible for overclocking the processors when certain apps are running. Is this an evil plot by Samsung to take over the world using rogue benchmarking results? Is this something other manufacturers are doing? It's hard to say, but there is certainly something curious afoot. Check out the source to get all of the skinny on what exactly is going on.

China opens pipeline to bring gas from Myanmar

BEIJING --?

China has switched on a pipeline bringing natural gas from Myanmar, a state company said Monday, in a project that has raised concerns in Myanmar's nascent civil society about whether its giant neighbor's resource grabs will benefit local people.

The 793-kilometer (493-mile) pipeline connects the Bay of Bengal with southwest China's Yunnan province and is expected to transfer 12 billion cubic meters of natural gas to China annually, according to a news release on the website of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). A parallel 771-kilometer (479-mile) pipeline that will carry Middle East oil ? shipped via the Indian Ocean ? is still under construction.

China's investments, largely in energy and mining, have generated controversy in Myanmar because they have done little to relieve that country's chronic power shortages. In response, the Myanmar government abruptly suspended construction in 2011 of the China-backed Myitsone dam, which would displace thousands and flood the spiritual heartland of Myanmar's Kachin ethnic minority.

While the pipelines are expected to provide only a small proportion of China's oil and gas consumption, they are strategically important to Beijing. The gas pipeline that began operating Sunday offers a nearby source of gas, and the oil pipeline would eliminate the need for tankers from the Middle East to pass through the crowded Malacca Strait between Malaysia and Indonesia.

The two joint ventures are between state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and Myanmar's national petroleum company Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise. Four other companies from India and South Korea also have stakes in the project, according to CNPC.

For years, China was the closest ally of Myanmar's military regime, which was shunned by the West because of its poor human rights record and failure to hand power to an elected government. Since 2011, when an elected, though still military-backed, government took office, Myanmar has undergone political and economic reforms and has courted investment from the West.

The reforms have brought heightened activity from nongovernment and civil society groups in Myanmar, said Tony Nash, Singapore-based managing director of economics and risk consulting for IHS, an independent economic consultant. This, together with growing competition from Western companies in Myanmar, will push Chinese companies to be more transparent about how their investments will affect the local population, he said.

In April, hundreds of people protested in western Rakhine state against the pipeline, saying they had to give up their land for too little compensation and that salaries offered for local pipeline workers were too low.

"Some of the responses to that protest back in April were really specific to looking at community needs and responding with corporate social responsibility at the local level," said Nash. Chinese companies are increasingly "saying 'we hear you and we want to make a commitment for corporate social responsibility,' you are seeing Chinese companies becoming a bit more savvy in that respect," he said.

Wong Aung, who heads the Shwe Gas Movement, which campaigns against the pipelines on human rights and environmental grounds, said the government and companies have not clarified how the project's benefits would be shared.

"The contracts made by the previous government need to be reviewed to see whether they guarantee the national interest and rights of every citizen and whether they meet international standards or not," he said.

Even on the Chinese side of the border, opposition to the pipeline has been strong. In May, more than 2,000 people worried about air and water pollution protested in Kunming in Yunnan against a planned petroleum refinery connected to the project.

This Psychedelic Fever Dream Is Made Of Ink, Soap And Oil

You may not interact with ink as much as you used to, but you have to give it credit for powering millions of pens and a crap ton of printing. We still consume a lot of media that exists because of ink. And a good way to celebrate it might be to just let it flow and see what happens. Ruslan Khasanov, a Russian graphic designer, felt the same way so he mixed ink, oil and soap to make this trippy and awesome video called Pacific Light. Khasanov was inspired when he watched black beads of soy sauce form in oil while he was cooking. There are great stills and gifs on his Behance. Kind of makes me long for a tie die comeback. DNP Xbox One Wireless Controller, Play and Charge kit and Headset up for preorder

Already locked down your Xbox One Day One Edition order? Now's your chance to also reserve its initial batch of accessories (including that mono Chat Headset, which isn't included with the console). The Wireless Controller ($60), Play and Charge Kit ($25) and Chat Headset ($25) for the Xbox One have all popped up for pre-order at the Microsoft Store. The One's gamepad rings up at five bones more than the 360 variant, but it's also available as a $75 bundle with the Play and Charge Kit (roughly 10 dollars in savings). Joystiq notes that Gamestop and Amazon are also options, albeit only for the controller itself. If you plan to reserve any of the accessories, we'd suggest taking Microsoft's Dec 31st arrival date as a loose estimate -- the One releases in November and Amazon is pegging the controller for November 27th.

Neighborhood patrols ponder gun use after Zimmerman case

By Jonathan Kaminsky

FOX ISLAND, Washington (Reuters) - On a recent afternoon Kent Holder drove his Ford pickup truck, emblazoned with "Citizens' Patrol" magnetic decals, through this leafy enclave west of Tacoma, Washington, recalling when he learned that George Zimmerman had shot and killed an unarmed teenager - and was a neighborhood watch volunteer.

"I thought, ?Boy, did he ever screw up,'" said Holder, 74, a retired fireman and five-year neighborhood patrol veteran.

In Holder's view, Zimmerman violated two basic tenets of the watch program: Never confront a person you perceive to be suspicious, and never carry a weapon while on duty.

Last weekend, a Florida jury acquitted Zimmerman, 29, of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, who was unarmed, in Sanford, Florida. The case has focused fresh attention on the civilian patrols by law enforcement and trainers.

Zimmerman, 29, who is white and Hispanic, spotted Martin, who was black, as the teenager walked to the home of his father's fianc?e from a convenience store. Zimmerman thought Martin looked suspicious and called the police. The two had a confrontation and Martin ended up dead.

The National Sheriffs' Association's neighborhood watch program was established in 1972 to combat a spike in suburban and rural burglaries.

It was designed to empower civilians to act as "the eyes and ears of law enforcement" without taking matters into their own hands, said John Thompson, who directs the initiative. The association's 37-page manual states that patrol members should be told that "they shall not carry weapons."

While the group is seen as an authority, fewer than a third of the estimated 90,000 neighborhood watch groups in existence nationwide have registered with it, said Thompson. Zimmerman's watch group was not among those registered, he said.

"I could show you 50 groups with 50 different sets of rules," Thompson said.

During the trial, Wendy Dorival, a civilian with the Sanford, Florida, police department, testified that she trained Zimmerman on neighborhood watch protocol, advising him to avoid initiating confrontations. It was not clear whether she counseled him on whether to carry a gun.

Barring guns from civilian patrols is a legal gray area since most U.S. citizens have the legal right to bear arms, said Kenneth Novak, a criminologist at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, who has studied watch programs.

Local watch groups, as private entities, are on relatively firm legal ground in setting no-weapons policies for their members, Novak said, but law enforcement agencies mandating such rules could run the risk of exceeding their authority.

"People participating in neighborhood watch enjoy all the legal protections under the Constitution, as well as state and federal law," said Novak. "That can include carrying a weapon."

Jeffrey Dehan, a sergeant who advises neighborhood watch groups as part of his duties with the Thurston County Sheriff's Office in Washington state, says it is not their role to offer guidance on whether members should carry a weapon.

"We don't advocate 'should or shouldn't,'" he said.

Carmen Caldwell, the executive director of Citizens' Crime Watch of Miami-Dade, in Florida, said that in the wake of the Zimmerman case, some trainers and others were considering new safeguards, which could include background checks on prospective members and teaching about racial profiling.

Holder, the ex-fireman from Washington, said fallout from the Trayvon Martin shooting has been minimal.

"There was concern that we would've had something negative from it," he said. "But nobody has ever said, 'You guys shouldn't be out here.' They love us. They love having us."

Hunter Mahan chooses his daughter's birth over golf

Hunter Mahan was leading the RBC Canadian Open golf tournament on Saturday. But then his wife went into labor. So, Hunter Mahan withdrew from the tournament.

Adios! Hunter Mahan waves after sinking a birdie putt on the 18th hole during the second round at the Canadian Open golf tournament in Oakville, Ontario. Mahan was leading the tournament on Saturday July 27, when he withdrew to attend the birth of his first child.

Players are expected to call penalties on themselves, even if no one is looking.

That's why it's fitting that Hunter Mahan ? who was leading the RBC Canadian Open after two rounds ?? withdrew to attend the birth of his daughter. Mahan did the right thing ? for himself, for golf, and for fathers everywhere.

That's not to say that it was an easy decision. Mahan hasn't won a PGA tournament this year. He finished in the top 10 in two recent big tournaments ? the US Open and the British Open Championship. Going into Saturday's third round, he was leading by two shots. And if he had won, Mahan would have pocketed a $1,008,000 winner's check.

How many new dad's would walk away from a $1 million pay day?

The baby wasn't due for a few weeks. But then his phone rang Saturday morning, while he was warming up on the practice range. His wife was in labor, her water had broken. He didn't hesitate. He politely left the tournament.

?I received exciting news a short time ago that my wife Kandi has gone into labor with our first child,? said Mahan. ?As a result, I have withdrawn from the RBC Canadian Open to return to Dallas. I would like to extend my very sincere gratitude and appreciation to RBC and the RBC Canadian Open.

"Kandi and I are thrilled about this addition to the Mahan family and we look forward to returning to the RBC Canadian Open in the coming years.?

Mahan is not the first golfer to face the challenge of fatherhood vs. work. As Yahoo Sports writer Jay Busbee wrote: "Back in 1999, Phil Mickelson famously wore a beeper during the U.S. Open. His daughter was born the day after Mickelson lost to Payne Stewart. More recently, Ross Fisher vowed to walk off the course at the 2009 British Open no matter what if he heard his wife was going into labor; he was just one stroke behind leader Tom Watson at the time."

And last fall, Chicago Bears cornerback Charles Tillman caused a stir when he suggested that the birth of his child would take precedent over showing up for his job. It sparked conversations on talk radio and in social media about work and family priorities. Tillman said:

"[Football will] always be second or third in my life. That was a great lesson learned, to teach me that family ? when I?m done playing football ? my family will always be there for me.?

As The Christian Science Monitor reported at the time, "Tillman's announcement drew criticism from some sports columnists and fans. Sport radio talk show starkly framed the question: "If you only work 16 days a year, should you miss one for the birth of your child?"

Tillman's daughter was eventually born on a Monday, saving the NFL player and fans from any further controversy.

But Mahan's daughter Zoe arrived on a work day. As a father, it's unlikely Mahan will regret the decision to leave the golf tournament. And there are probably more than a few dads ? who missed the birth of their first child ? who would now gladly give a $1 million to be there.
