Latino Democrat narrows race for Senate in Arizona

GILA RIVER INDIAN COMMUNITY, Arizona (Reuters) - A Latino Democrat who rose from a hardscrabble childhood to become U.S. surgeon general has tightened the race for an open Senate seat in Arizona, a state that hasn't elected a Democratic senator in almost 25 years.

With just two weeks before the November 6 election, Democrat Richard Carmona is in a statistical dead heat with six-term Republican congressman Jeff Flake, the early favorite.

Carmona has been boosted in part by a drive to register thousands of Hispanics riled by the border state's crackdown on illegal immigration. But it is economic issues such as job creation and deficit reduction, not immigration, that are dominating the discourse in the race.

"I see the job as a senator as being the primary advocate for ... business interests in my community," Carmona said in a in a debate with Flake at the Gila River Indian Community south of Phoenix last week.

Arizona has not elected a Democratic senator since Dennis DeConcini won a third and final term in 1988. Flake and Carmona are battling for the Senate seat vacated by Republican Jon Kyl.

A win for Carmona would boost Democrats, who hope to hold onto a slim 51-47 advantage over Republicans in the U.S. Senate.

Victory for either candidate will depend on independent voters, who make up about a third of the state's electorate and tend to be moderate. That is one reason analysts say neither candidate is campaigning hard on the state's divisive crackdown on illegal immigrants.

Arizonans are "very hawkish on the border issues, but they're pretty darn moderate in terms of how to solve this problem about (illegal immigrants) who have been here a long time ... and the candidates know that," said Bruce Merrill, a political analyst and professor emeritus at Arizona State University.

Carmona's life story is part of his campaign's appeal. He was raised in poverty in New York City by Puerto Rican parents who struggled with alcoholism and substance abuse.

Carmona dropped out of high school and enlisted in the Army, where he became a decorated Special Forces combat medic in the Vietnam War. He returned to school, eventually earning his medical degree and later being named surgeon general by Republican President George W. Bush.

He is campaigning on a platform of job creation and balancing the federal budget, and pledges to move beyond partisanship to break the deadlock in Washington if elected.

Flake, 49, a fifth-generation Arizonan, seeks to galvanize the party's conservative base with his opposition to abortion and a record of voting to cut taxes and the size of government. He is also pledging to tackle the U.S. budget deficit.

"We've got to change direction in this country, we can't continue (to spend) our kids' inheritance," he told voters at the debate.

COURTING INDEPENDENTS

As they head toward Election Day, Carmona has a cash advantage and is polling at least even with Flake after starting out behind. He also has raised $2.2 million in the third quarter, compared to Flake's $1.3 million.

A Behavior Research Center poll this month had Carmona leading Flake 44 percent to 40 percent among likely voters, within the 4.4 percentage-point margin of error. A Public Policy Polling survey had the Democrat ahead 45 percent to 43 percent, noting he was winning over independents and had crossover Republican support. The margin of error was four percentage points.

That contrasts with two polls last month, by HighGround and Rasmussen Reports, that had Flake ahead by three to six points.

Carmona, 62, is being aided by activists who are using anger at the state's immigration crackdown and sweeps by controversial Phoenix-area Sheriff Joe Arpaio to register thousands of Latino voters in door-to-door campaigns, state Democrats say.

The state Democratic Party said activists have registered about 15,000 voters - some new, others re-registered - in recent months. They were not able to say how many were Hispanic.

Both candidates support strong border enforcement. But Carmona also backs a comprehensive immigration overhaul and the Dream Act, legislation that would allow some children of illegal immigrants a chance to stay in the United States legally.

Part of Flake's challenge is with moderate Republicans and independents alienated by his rightward tilt in the primary to defeat a rival who was popular with conservative Tea Party activists, analysts say.

"Arizona is indicative of some of the problems Republicans are having nationally when they nominate candidates who are notably more conservative than the median voter in the state," said Mark P. Jones, a political scientist at Rice University.

"It can potentially cause problems in the general election," he added.

Flake acknowledged he has a fight on his hands, but said he felt confident his message would appeal across the spectrum.

"Economic opportunity, a change in direction from where we're going now, independents certainly gravitate toward that as well as a lot of Democrats ... because they understand that this administration ... is really stifling job creation," he said.

Houston Auto Insurance There are more cars and drivers hitting the road every year. With countless vehicles on the road, accidents will happen. Automobile insurance can be the difference between a minor inconvenience and a major trial. But why do you need insurance and just how much should you buy? Auto insurance protects you by covering the cost of damage or injury you cause others while driving your car, damage to your car or injury to you or your passengers from a crash, and specific other occurrences, such as theft. Auto insurance is required by law in all states and provinces. Without insurance, you risk having to pay the full cost of any harm you cause others or of repairing or replacing your car if it is damaged or stolen. It pays for damages due to bodily injury and property damage to others for which you are responsible. Bodily injury damages include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property and loss of use of property. If you are sued, it also pays your defense and court costs. State laws usually mandate minimum amounts, but higher amounts are available and usually recommended. Personal injury protection: This is required in some states and is optional in others. Sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage, this pays the medical treatment for you or your passengers regardless of who was at fault. It may also pay for lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. State law usually sets minimum amounts. Medical payments: This coverage is available states that are not considered no-fault; it pays regardless of who may have been at fault. It pays for an insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses for bodily injury from a crash. Collision: This pays for damage to your car caused by a collision. Comprehensive: Applies if your car is stolen or damaged by causes other than collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured motorist: This pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have liability insurance or by a person who cannot be identified (usually a hit-and-run driver). Under-insured motorist: This pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have enough liability insurance to cover the full amount of the damages. Other coverages, like car rental and emergency road service, are also available.Your auto insurance payments vary by company and will depend on several factors, including: * What coverage you select * The make and model of the car you drive * Your driving record * Your age, sex and marital status and * Where you live Many people think of auto insurance as a necessary evil, but it can save your financial well-being. Evaluate your needs, research your options and with the guidance of your insurance agent make the decision that best suits you. More On Vehicle Insurance

The secrets of success? according to Jimmy Roos

You are here: Home / News / The secrets of success? according to Jimmy Roos

October 15, 2012 By admin

By Danielle Campbell

Motivational speaker and certified life coach, Jimmy Roos, says that one of the biggest misconceptions and greatest deceptions known to man is the concept that people who work hard will achieve success.
Roos, who has authored several e-books including, ?The truth about self-improvement?, holds a degree in psychology, founded the total transformation programme and believes in the teachings of Abraham Hicks.

Jimmy Roos

He is a former radio host and now hosts the weekly television programme, ?Destination Success? on CNS Channel Six on Fridays. Almost everyone can count as many persons as their fingers would allow, who have worked hard, tirelessly and honestly all their lives and are still not successful, or have died without achieving success.
According to Roos, although many persons work very hard, the majority seem not to be making much headway. Roos quoted his favourite American business philosopher, Jim Rohn, who said that success is neither magical nor mysterious, but is a natural consequence of consistently applying the basic fundamentals.
It was also Rohn who said that, ?you don?t chase after success; you attract success by the person you become. Work hard on the job and you will make a living; work hard on yourself and you will make a fortune.? Roos believes that there is an identical model for successful people who each carry discernable character traits.
He said that in order to achieve success, people must alter their mindset and way of thinking which will eventually lead to a change of attitude, behaviour, habit, beliefs and value systems.
?Learn to make right decisions, solve problems, learn how to react to criticisms, be forgiving, respectful of others,? Roos pointed out. He noted that successful people engage in meaningful, productive activities and are all about excellence.
?They don?t believe in trying, they either do something or they don?t do it, and they are totally committed. Their mood is not driven by the weather or other external factors, and they are socially and emotionally intelligent. They always consider the consequences of their actions and they plan days ahead of schedule. They are proactive and take responsibility while others wait for someone to do something for them.?
Roos draws a parallel between life and a game of golf.
?As a life coach, I cannot help you to live your life, but I can help you to improve your game. Sometimes you play well and at other times you?re not at your best,? Roos stated.
He related that the coach?s job is to analyse life and figure out what brings out the best in a person, and determine the factors behind his successes as well as his failures. The coach then comes up with a solution to tighten up on the weak areas and show his client what is causing him/her to mess up.
?There are times when everything flows smoothly and goes right and at other times they do not. My job is to figure out what is it that keeps you from maximising your potential,?
He detailed that life coaching is not likened to counselling where the person is given instructions and told what to do. However, in life coaching, the person is presented with a number of options and pointed to the pros and cons.
?Humans don?t like to be told what to do since there?s an innate resistance to directions or instructions. The difference is that I?m not an expert telling you what to do, but I?m a partner working with you. Most people who need help and ask for assistance are really asking for assurance, endorsement and affirmation; they already know what they want to do,? Roos explained.
He remarked that persons who are willing to change their lives and chart a different course are always made fun of by friends and family as they are in an immediate sphere of influence.
?Friends and family are usually the last to believe in you. They will begin to discourage, distract and doubt you, and then you begin to second guess yourself and eventually doubt your abilities,? Roos disclosed.
He explained that a person can only think what they have experienced, and therefore, if they have not experienced much, then their thoughts are not as broad or wide-ranging. He emphasised that his job is to suggest ideas to his clients and examine which ideas the person may be comfortable with, if their experiences do not allow them to have broad ideas.
?But at the end of the day, you are in the driver?s seat and I can?t choose for you. I give you the power to make decisions and that?s what makes people feel in charge and powerful. People can succeed once there is someone to believe in them, there?s someone to stand by them and applaud your efforts.?
Roos believes that he possesses a special gift for analysing situations critically, having come from an environment of abuse. He said he can assess a person?s behaviour and understand their background and past.
?I?m able to build a rapport with persons because I can relate to their situation and help them build their self-esteem, develop a better sense of confidence and a good opinion of themselves,? Roos stressed.
He pointed out that relevant to Guyana?s situation, life coaching is important because the society is riddled with domestic and sexual violence and lots of child abuse.
These, he said, are always traumatic experiences which leave lasting impressions on the psyche of victims. ?Adults never outgrow the traumas they experience as children; they just learn how to bury them inside, wear masks, and pretend that everything is fine,? Roos stated.
According to him, this is why many people cannot live liberated lives and lash out, snap and explode when their buttons are pushed. ?What I have found is that there is a lot of repressed anger in Guyana and people just need a little spark to explode in anger. So many children are ready to fight at the slightest things.?
Roos detailed that his job is to help those persons to understand their role and purpose in life and assist them in overcoming the pain and hurt which prevent them from living satisfying and fulfilling lives. ?I can help you to find out what it is that you were sent here for and that which you are meant to do. You may not be fully focused and you are always worried about what people think about you. The information available can change your life in so many ways.?
Roos also provides motivational speeches for businesses and companies where it is felt that employees have become lacklustre and uninspired in specific areas. He also conducts personal life coaching and one-on-one sessions to ensure that persons are open to the endless possibilities. Roos also does volunteer work at the various children?s homes and offers guidance and counselling for early school leavers, who may be clueless as to their next step in life.

Massachusetts Senate hopeful Warren leads fundraising race

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Elizabeth Warren, the Democratic hopeful in a hotly contested Massachusetts U.S. Senate race, was the top fundraiser among Senate candidates in the third quarter with $12.1 million, according to reports from candidates on Monday.

Monday was the deadline for political campaigns to file their fund-raising reports with the Federal Election Commission for the quarter ended September 30.

Warren is in a tight race with Republican incumbent Senator Scott Brown, one of just over a dozen contests that will decide whether Democrats keep majority Senate control. Republicans need a net gain of at least four seats to take the majority.

Warren easily outraised Brown, but fell short of a spot in the money-raising record books.

"It's definitely a large quarterly total and puts her in the top tier," said Bob Biersack, a senior fellow at the Center for Responsive Politics. "But it's not unprecedented."

The quarterly record, Biersack said, belongs to Linda McMahon, the former professional wrestling company executive and two-time Republican candidate for Senate in Connecticut. In 2010, McMahon raised $20 million in the third quarter - much of it her own money - only to lose to Richard Blumenthal.

Warren's opponent Brown had the second-largest haul among those surveyed by Reuters, bringing in nearly $7.5 million in the quarter, according to his campaign. Warren has had a narrow lead in most recent polls.

In another high-profile race, Missouri Republican Todd Akin, who was spurned by his own party after his controversial remarks about "legitimate rape," did not give a fundraising figure. Many major Republican donors withdrew their support for Akin after the remarks, and his spokesman said that Akin would not be releasing his fundraising report on Monday.

Akin's opponent Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill reported earlier this month that she had raised $5.8 million in the quarter. McCaskill has led in polls since the Akin gaffe.

The two contenders in the Senate race in Virginia, another closely watched fight, also garnered large amounts with Tim Kaine, a former governor and Democratic party chair, raising $4.5 million. His Republican rival, former governor and Senator George Allen, raised nearly $3.5 million, according to campaigns. Kaine has a slight lead in polls although the race is expected to remain tight.

Wisconsin Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat who would be the first openly gay U.S. Senator if she wins, raised $4.6 million in the quarter, more than double the $2.2 million raised by her Republican opponent, former Governor Tommy Thompson. Thompson led polls immediately after his Republican primary victory but has fallen behind slightly of late.

Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel, who is waging a spirited race against incumbent Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, raised $4.5 million in the quarter, according to his campaign. Brown's campaign said his fundraising total would not be released on Monday. Brown has led by single digits but some recent polls have shown a closer race.

COSTLY CONTESTS

Indiana Tea Party favorite and Republican nominee for the Senate, State Treasurer Richard Mourdock, raised $3 million in the third quarter, double the $1.5 million raised by Democratic Congressman Joe Donnelly. Mourdock ousted longtime Indiana Senator Richard Lugar in the Republican primary and the bitter feelings from that race have left some voters disenchanted and polls showing a tight race.

In Florida, Republican Congressman Connie Mack, the son of a former U.S. senator from Florida, reported raising $2.7 million in the quarter, while incumbent Senator Bill Nelson, reported raising $2.3 million. Nelson has been leading by single digits in most polls.

In Nebraska, Republican Deb Fischer reported raising $2.4 million in the third quarter, while Democratic former governor and Senator Bob Kerrey reported raising $1.7 million. Fischer came from behind to win the Republican primary and is leading in the polls, giving Republicans a good chance of gaining a seat.

Pennsylvania Republican challenger Bob Smith slightly outraised incumbent Senator Bob Casey with their campaigns reporting $1.6 million and $1.5 million raised in the quarter. Smith has narrowed Casey's lead in recent polls.

In Connecticut, Chris Murphy, the Democratic congressman facing McMahon in this year's Senate race, raised nearly $2.9 million, according to his campaign. McMahon is mainly self-financed and has been very close to Murphy in surveys conducted in a typically Democratic state.

Nevada Senator Dean Heller, the Republican appointed to fill out the term of an incumbent who resigned, reported raising $1.6 million, about the same as the $1.65 million raised by his opponent, Congresswoman Shelley Berkley. Heller has held a narrow lead in most polls.

Another endangered incumbent is Montana Democratic Senator Jon Tester, who announced he raised $2.3 million in the quarter compared with $2.4 million for his opponent, Republican Congressman Denny Rehberg. The race has been tight all year in the polls.

In another close race in the West, Democratic candidate Richard Carmona, a former Surgeon General, topped his Republican opponent Congressman Jeff Flake in fundraising. Carmona received $2.2 million in the quarter compared to $1.3 million for Flake, who was the favorite but has been even or behind in some polls.

A state where Republicans hope to pick up a seat is North Dakota. Republican candidate Congressman Rick Berg reported raising $1.57 million and Democrat Heidi Heitkamp reported $1.6 million. There have been few polls in the sparsely populated state but those taken show a dead heat.

The completed filings, which will not be made public until later this month, provide a glimpse of the fundraising efforts of candidates before the final reporting date of October 25.

CSU-Pueblo received 23 of 30 first-place votes, six going to No. 2 Winston-Salem State (N.C.) and one to Northwest Missouri State. This is the second time the ThunderWolves have reached No. 1 in the nation.

On Saturday, CSU-Pueblo will host Black Hills State (S.D.).

New Posters & TV Spots For Denzel Washington?s ?Flight?

One of the years greatest tragedies for us film fans, is that we will no longer be able to see another collaboration between Tony Scott and Denzel Washington. Thankfully, Washington is still around and it?s always great to see the Oscar-winner in front of the camera and his latest looks to be another nail-biting and intriguing prospect.

FLIGHT is Robert Zemeckis? first live-action effort since the brilliant CASTAWAY, and he directs Washington?s pilot who saves a plane-full of passengers when avoiding catastrophic crash. As the praise is heaped, seeing him labelled a hero, the subsequent investigation suggests Washington?s character could be the one at fault and keeping a secret all to his own.

Below we have the brand new posters and television spots for the thriller expected 1st February 2013. We?ve also added the trailer for those that missed it.

10 Reasons Why Your Business Needs a Blog | Xavier Media?

October 14th, 2012 by Guest Blogger in Blogging, Guest Posts. Topics: blog, business plan, Facebook, Google, PR, Twitter This post is a guest blog post by Guest Blogger. Would you also like to write a guest post for us? Contact us!

Marketing is one of the most fundamental elements of a successful business plan ? you could have the best product in the world but if nobody knows about it you wouldn't make a single sale!

From paid advertising and social marketing to media outreach and PR, the choices are endless.

However, the hub of your activity ? especially online ? should be your blog.

Many new companies fail to "get" the blogging culture and see it as an investment of money and time that they could spend elsewhere, but the truth is that a blog can make all of your other marketing campaigns a lot more successful.

Here are ten excellent reasons for you to use a blog as the hub of your marketing activity:

  1. It builds more traffic. If you want to drive targeted traffic to your business website, there are few better ways than by updating your blog regularly with news, information, tips and advice.
  2. It lets you get social. Combining a blog with your social media presence on Twitter and Facebook is perfect because you can share the content with new and existing followers to increase your potential customer base, build your brand and engage more with the real people who will use your services.
  3. It engages with your target audience. Instead of being another nameless, faceless company in a sea of search results, having a blog lets people connect with you on a personal level ? and if they know you, they'll be more likely to buy from you.
  4. It establishes you as an expert. By sharing up-to-date and relavant information about your niche, people who find you will start to think of you as an expert and trusted advisor ? not only does this raise your brand awareness, it will increase your conversions too.
  5. It builds a community. Bringing together like minded people is an excellent way to spread your product and your brand through word of mouth marketing. Not to mention, Google is changing and will reward sites that are actively engaging their audience, connecting with them socially and sharing high quality content. That means even more search engine traffic!
  6. It's better for customer service. Customers hate being put on hold or waiting until office hours to get in touch. Having FAQ blog posts, or announcements about changes to your product or service can easily be shared across social platforms to keep your customers up to date on what's going on. This open approach is just another way to form a relationship with your visitors.
  7. It lets you build a database. When you have a blog and a loyal following of readers, you can leverage this by capturing them as leads in a database. Offering a free product or trial is a good incentive, and it gives you a list of people who want to hear from you that you can market to, no matter what happens to your other traffic sources ? just be sure to keep offering them excellent content and exclusive deals!
  8. It's good for reputation management. People online can write anything about you and your business. If you receive negative reviews, it's possible to use your blog to manage it and ensure that if customers do read a negative comment, you have used your voice and authority to clearly explain the situation.
  9. It can generate free content. Once your blog is established you might be approached by guest bloggers, or you might ask your customers to write about their experiences, to write guest posts (like this one!). It's a good way to offer a different voice to your audience, while still being able to leverage it for search engine traffic, social media mentions and more.
  10. It tells you what customers want. Comments on the blog, questions sent via the contact form, search engine keyword statistics and surveys your audience fill out will all give you vital market intelligence on exactly what the people visiting your site are interested in. You can then tailor your content around this to increase conversions.

If you already have a website and you don't have a blog in place, then you're missing out on very high quality, targeted traffic that is very cost effective to acquire.

It allows you to build a reputation, stand out from the crowd, reach people on a personal level and will improve other channels of your marketing mix (like social) by giving you content to shout about.

How can you make a blog work for your business?

We have lift off: Felix Baumgartner and Red Bull Stratos launch for record-breaking space jump, watch right here (update: done!)

Felix Baumgartner and Red Bull Stratos preparing for next record-breaking space jump attempt, watch right here video

Talk about building up the tension! Yep, our favorite Austrian daredevil is back out on the New Mexico desert, hoping the weather will hold, and he can finally fall into the record books. Don't forget, you can catch up on Felix Baumgartner's long journey to Roswell in our project overview, but if you're just here for the jump, no problem, as you can watch right here too. Currently conditions are looking like they might just go in Baumgartner's favor, despite some initial concerns about wind levels. But, as we found out earlier in the week, anything can change in an instant. Hold on to your hat (and your breakfast), and hop past the break to watch the events unfold live.

Update: Some spoilers lurk ahead if you didn't get to watch live and wanted to catch the event for yourself, so switch articles if you want to catch replays later on. For everyone else: it's a success! Despite some worries about heat going to the helmet visor that threatened the attempt, Baumgartner has at least unofficially broken records both for the highest-ever manned balloon flight and the all-important altitude record for a jump, either of which respectively occurred just over and just under 128,000 feet. Baumgartner also broke the speed record for freefall, although he was just short of Joe Kittinger's 4-minute, 36-second freefall duration. There's a media event still ahead that should provide more details, but for now we'd just like to welcome Felix back to Earth.

Biden comes out swinging at debate, clashes with Ryan

DANVILLE, Kentucky (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Joe Biden leaped to the attack against Republican challenger Paul Ryan in a lively debate on Thursday, aggressively defending the Obama administration's economic and foreign policies to try to regain momentum in the White House race.

Biden was looking for a Democratic rebound after President Barack Obama's poor debate performance last week. But the younger and less experienced Ryan held his own in a series of testy exchanges.

"With all due respect, that is a bunch of malarkey," Biden said when Ryan accused the White House of projecting an image of American weakness to the world.

First estimates of who prevailed at the debate in Kentucky were split. A CBS News survey of undecided voters showed Biden as the winner by 50 percent to 31 percent, while a CNN poll of debate watchers scored Ryan the victor by 48 percent to 44 percent.

The vice presidential candidates in the November 6 election frequently interrupted each other, talking at the same time and sometimes staring at each other in disbelief.

Biden grinned and laughed sarcastically at times, dismissing the Wisconsin congressman's answers. But he repeatedly provided the passion that Obama was criticized for lacking in last week's debate with Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

The White House race shifted in Romney's favor after that encounter in Denver and he has taken the lead in some national polls with less than four weeks before the election. A Reuters-Ipsos online tracking poll on Thursday before the debate showed Romney leading Obama by 47 percent to 44 percent.

"Mr. Vice President, I know you're under a lot of duress to make up for lost ground, but I think people would be better served if we don't keep interrupting each other," Ryan said at one point.

"Well, don't take all the four minutes then," Biden responded. He later added: "I don't know what world this guy's living in."

'COULD NOT BE PROUDER'

Obama, who watched the debate on Air Force One while returning from a campaign trip, jogged out to meet reporters after landing and praised his No. 2.

"I thought Joe Biden did terrific tonight. I could not be prouder of him. He made a very strong case," Obama said.

Romney called Ryan to congratulate him after the debate.

The fiery debate was likely to energize the base supporters of both parties, although Biden's smirks and dismissive comments were risky.

"There's a fine line between showing passionate disagreement and showing obnoxiousness," said political scientist Jamie Chandler of Hunter College in New York.

Biden portrayed Ryan, the 42-year-old chairman of the House Budget Committee, as out of step with working Americans for supporting a budget plan that slashes government spending and creates a "voucher" system for the popular Medicare healthcare program for seniors.

"It will not keep pace with healthcare costs. Because if it did keep pace with healthcare costs, there would be no savings," Biden said. "We will be no part of a voucher program or the privatization of Social Security."

Ryan said Democrats had not put a credible solution on the table to address the long-range fiscal problems for Medicare. "He'll say all these things to try and scare people," he said.

At one point, Ryan made reference to how President John F. Kennedy, a Democrat, had lowered tax rates. "Oh, now you're Jack Kennedy?" Biden asked.

HOMETOWN JOBS

Ryan pointed out that he and Biden were from similar towns - he is from Janesville, Wisconsin, and Biden from Scranton, Pennsylvania - and said unemployment had gone up in Scranton since Obama took office.

"That's how it's going all around America," Ryan said. Biden said Ryan had not read the recent statistics showing unemployment dropping to 7.8 percent nationally in September.

"That's not how it's going. It's going down," he said.

On foreign policy, Ryan said Americans were seeing the "unraveling" of Obama's approach, while Biden attacked Romney for holding a news conference on Libya last month just after the U.S. diplomatic compound was attacked and the ambassador killed.

Ryan said the Obama administration had given confusing information about the attack on the consulate in Benghazi, which killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

"It took the president two weeks to acknowledge that this was a terrorist attack," the Wisconsin congressman said.

Biden, 69, the former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committees, pointed out the lack of international experience on the Romney-Ryan ticket.

He vowed that the Obama administration would find the perpetrators of the attack and rectify mistakes in security at the diplomatic mission.

The two candidates sat across from each other at a table but the proximity did not lessen the conflict.

Ryan defended Romney's secretly recorded video condemning the "47 percent" of the electorate that he said was dependent on government and considered themselves victims, calling it a mistake.

The Republican joked that the gaffe-prone Biden should understand that "sometimes the words don't always come out the right way."

Is Nobel to Mo a move to placate China, asks daily

Beijing, Oct 12

A state-run Chinese daily wondered Friday if writer Mo Yan winning the Nobel Prize in Literature was "a sign of the Nobel committee seeking to mitigate tensions with China after awarding the Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo in 2010".

Chinese author Mo Yan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature Thursday.

An article in the Op-Ed section of Global Times said: "Ordinarily, we should treat the Nobel Prize with indifference, as past prizes have tended to be politicized, just like the peace prize."

"However, it seems that Chinese society has attached a great deal of attention to the Nobel Prize in Literature and other Nobel prizes. We are surrounded by Western culture's soft power. Previously, Peace prizes for the (Tibetan spiritual leader) Dalai Lama and Liu Xiaobo conveyed very unfriendly and even hostile massages," it said.

Liu Xiaobo co-authored a manifesto that calls for political reform and greater rights in China. He won the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize.

Gao Xingjian, a Chinese-born French citizen, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2000.

"Chinese people generally believed that Gao was awarded this prize because of the political leanings in his literary works," said the daily.

It said that Mo's win "will amend Chinese people's attitudes toward the Nobel Prize. However, a sense of trust toward the prize will not be established anytime soon in Chinese mainstream society".

"The award recognizes Mo's literary achievements and status. But could the decision also be a sign of the Nobel committee seeking to mitigate tensions with China after awarding the Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo in 2010?," it asked.

It went on to say that as China and the West have a delicate relationship, "it's natural the award will touch our nerves whether a Chinese citizen is awarded the Nobel Prize or not".

"The prize indeed carries some significance. Chinese are granted more awards in non-science fields. This reflects the greater attention the West is giving China. The Nobel Prize is closing the distance with China in its own way," it added.

Noting that Mo is a mainstream Chinese writer, it said this suggests that the West "doesn't only embrace individuals that are against the Chinese system".

"It cannot reject the Chinese mainstream for long. No matter what inspired the award this time, it is a welcome decision. We hope such appreciation of Chinese mainstream ideas can extend further," it added.

(AP) ? The entire season was a comeback for Buster Posey, so he didn't think anything of it when San Francisco needed one of the biggest yet to play for a pennant.

He led them to one of Giant proportions.

The National League batting champion hit the third grand slam in Giants postseason history on Thursday, sending San Francisco back to the championship series with a 6-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

They will play Game 1 on Sunday, either in Washington against the Nationals or in San Francisco against the wild card St. Louis Cardinals. They planned to stick around town until the Nationals-Cardinals series, tied 2-all, is decided on Friday.

Matter which one?

"We could go up against anybody at any time," shortstop Brandon Crawford said. "Being down 2-0 and coming back and winning three at their place, it's an unbelievable feeling."

The Giants became the first NL team to overcome a 2-0 deficit in the division series, which began in 1995. Major League Baseball's changed playoff format this season allowed them to become the first to take a best-of-five by winning the last three on the road.

San Francisco won the World Series in 2010 without trailing in any of its postseason series. The Giants took four of five from Texas for their sixth title and their first since they moved from New York to San Francisco in 1958.

They've really had to scramble this season to get another shot at it.

Their bullpen took a huge hit when closer Brian Wilson blew out his elbow, and that was just the start. All-Star game MVP Melky Cabrera got a 50-game suspension in August after a positive testosterone test, taking a .346 hitter out of their lineup. The Giants have decided not to bring him back, even though he's eligible to return for the NL championship series.

Two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum pitched so poorly ? 15 losses ? that he got relegated to the bullpen for the division series.

And don't forget that Posey was coming off a broken leg that wiped out most of his 2011 season, making a great comeback of his own.

"Unreal," said Sergio Romo, who fanned Scott Rolen with two runners aboard to end it. "That guy's definitely the MVP of our team. We believe he's the MVP of the league. We wouldn't be here without him, that's for dang sure. He's the one that's been the face of the team all season long. What a great story with all he's been through last year."

Posey's second career grand slam, off Mat Latos, put the Giants up 6-0 in the fifth and sparked a joyous scrum in the San Francisco dugout. The ball smacked off the front of the upper deck in left field, just above Latos' name on the video board.

For the first time in the series, the Giants could exhale.

"I don't think anybody gave up," Posey said.

Will Clark, in the 1989 NLCS, and Chuck Hiller, in the 1962 World Series, hit the other Giants slams in the postseason.

Matt Cain and the bullpen held on, with more help from Posey. The All-Star catcher threw out Jay Bruce at third base to snuff out a sixth-inning rally that cut it to 6-3. The Giants had a pair of diving catches that preserved the lead in the eighth.

There was more drama in the ninth. Ryan Ludwick singled home a run before Romo got Rolen swinging to end it.

The Giants raised their arms, hugged and huddled by the side of the mound, bouncing in unison.

"It was a spectacular moment," outfielder Hunter Pence said.

In Cincinnati, the home-field meltdown had a sickeningly familiar feeling. The Reds haven't won a home playoff game in 17 years. After taking the first two on the West Coast, all they needed was one more at home, where they hadn't dropped three straight all season.

"You get tired of the disappointments, but then you get over it," manager Dusty Baker said. "It hurts big-time."

Once Posey connected, the Reds were the ones facing a steep comeback. They've never overcome a six-run deficit in the playoffs, according to STATS LLC.

Couldn't do it this time, either.

"Buster Posey's swing was a series-changer," said Reds star Joey Votto, standing on second base when the game ended. "That made it very difficult to come back. You know they're going to throw the kitchen sink at us."

The Reds won't forget the first inning of the series, when everything changed. Ace Johnny Cueto pulled muscles in his right side and had to leave the game. Latos pulled them through that opening game, pitching in relief on short rest for a 5-2 win.

He couldn't get them another one, or end that 17-year streak of futility.

NOTES: Posey's other career grand slam came on July 7, 2010, at Milwaukee. ... The Reds are 3-3 in winner-take-all playoff games, including 1-2 in best-of-five series and 2-1 in best-of-seven series. .. Teams that lose the first two games in a best-of-five series are 8-58 all-time. ... Cain gave up six hits and three runs in 6 2-3 innings, the longest appearance by a Giants starter during the series.
