Come Monday, NBA general managers officially can pick up the phone to call agents, players, relatives of players and anyone else who will help land free agents.

It becomes open season.

Unfortunately for the guys wearing the suits and ties in front offices, that recruiting process has gone on for weeks, months and, in some cases, years among the players themselves. It?s the NBA?s dirty little secret.

Chris Paul technically is a free agent. But all that?s happened under that veil is the point guard recruiting center Dwight Howard and picking out the next coach for the Los Angeles Clippers in Doc Rivers.

There?s your free-agent market.

Teams will spend the next two months getting better, fooling themselves that they have improved or purposely building to lose, hoping to land in the Andrew Wiggins lottery. You know who you are, Boston and Philadelphia.

Either way, let the intrigue begin. Well, pretend as if it?s about to begin.

TOP FREE AGENTS

Centers

1. Dwight Howard (Unrestricted) Welcome to ?The Indecision II,?? starring one of the more heartless big men in the game. Go get ?em, Dwight! Best guess: After saying yes to several teams and backing out, Howard ends up in Houston.

2. Al Jefferson (Unrestricted) The ?Carlos Boozer Consolation Prize?? of this summer?s free-agent class. Best guess: Utah would be smart to keep him, but a team such as San Antonio might sneak in to land the eventual replacement for Tim Duncan. Charlotte also is in play.

3. Andrew Bynum (Unrestricted) Start rolling the dice on bad knees and worse decisions on hairstyles. Best guess: After losing out on Howard, Dallas rolls out a contract full of incentives.

Power Forwards

1. David West (Unrestricted) At age 32, West knows that only a handful of teams are built to challenge the Miami Heat in the East, and his Pacers are one of them. Best guess: West stays put with Indiana.

2. Josh Smith (Unrestricted) Someday Smith will learn that he?s not a shooting guard. Unfortunately, someone will overpay this summer until that lesson is learned. Best guess: Desperate to help Kobe Bryant after losing out on Howard, the Lakers land Smith.

3. Paul Millsap (Unrestricted) The Jazz can?t keep Jefferson and Millsap. Best guess: They pass on Jefferson and keep Millsap.

Small Forwards

1. Andre Iguodala (Early Termination Option) The All-Star and former coach George Karl didn?t see eye-to-eye in Denver, but Karl is out. Best guess: As the playoffs taught Denver, they need a star. Iguodala is the best they have. The Nuggets re-sign him.

2. Andrei Kirilenko (Early Termination Option) Kirilenko put himself back on the map and wants Minnesota to pay him like a top stretch forward. Best guess: He stays put.

3. Kyle Korver (Unrestricted) Korver would love to return to the Bulls, and they would love to have him. Unless he?s willing to take a huge pay cut, it?s not happening. Best guess: Dallas lands the best pure shooter out there.

Shooting Guards

1. Manu Ginobili (Unrestricted) Ginobili looked old, slow and weathered in the playoffs, but he?s an institution in San Antonio. Best guess: Spurs.

2. Monta Ellis (Early Termination Option) Ellis opted out of Milwaukee because he feels as if he should be paid like an elite two-guard. Reality is about to hit him. Best guess: After a disappointing market, Ellis signs with some bad Western Conference team, such as Phoenix or Sacramento, never to be heard from again.

3. Kevin Martin (Unrestricted) Martin?s biggest problem in OKC was he wasn?t James Harden. Best guess: Martin stays in OKC, with a chance to make a run at the Finals.

Point Guards

1. Chris Paul (Unrestricted) Please. His decision was made up before Doc Rivers got on the plane to Los Angeles. Best guess: Clippers.

2. Brandon Jennings (Restricted) Several intriguing teams need scoring from the point-guard spot, with Dallas and Indiana atop that list. Best guess: He?s not going anywhere ? yet. Jennings stays in Milwaukee.

3. Jarrett Jack (Unrestricted) Jack was a huge veteran presence in the backcourt for the Warriors and a player they cannot do without just yet. Best guess: He stays in the Bay with Golden State.

BULLS? FREE-AGENT SHOPPING LIST

1. Marco Belinelli (Unrestricted) They would love to bring Belinelli back, especially with how far he came along defensively and in creating his own shot. Money is an issue, and one that won?t disappear easily. Best guess: Belinelli gets a can?t-say-no offer from a team that needs his scoring, such as Memphis.

2. Martell Webster (Unrestricted) Webster shot a career-high 42.2 percent on threes and would be a good bridge until Tony Snell learns the league. Best guess: Money still could be an issue.

3. Ronnie Brewer (Unrestricted) It has to happen. After watching Nate Robinson and Belinelli walk, the Bulls go back to what they know best ? a defensive-minded player. Best guess: Brewer comes cheap and is a Bull again.

Texas Gov. Perry: Abortion bill will pass

Associated Press

Posted on June 28, 2013 at 3:45 PM

AUSTIN ?? The abortion restrictions bill stopped by a Senate filibuster and raucous crowd in the chamber gallery will pass "overwhelmingly" when lawmakers return to the Texas Capitol next week, Gov. Rick Perry said Friday.

Perry has called a new 30-day special session of the Legislature starting Monday to address the abortion bill that failed after a marathon speech by Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth and disruptions caused by several hundred vocal demonstrators.

"It will pass overwhelmingly and will become the law in the state," Perry said in an interview with conservative radio host Laura Ingraham. "I think the voice of the people of Texas will be heard."

Davis and legislative Democrats stopped the bill at the midnight Tuesday deadline of the first special session in part because Perry had delayed adding it to the agenda. This time, lawmakers can take up the issue immediately and the Republican majorities in the House and Senate are expected to pass the bill for Perry to sign into law.

Perry, who ran for president in 2012 and is considering another campaign in 2016, also touched on federal issues during the radio interview, criticizing the immigration bill approved Thursday by the U.S. Senate.

"We will never have true immigration reform unless or until we secure our border," Perry said. "We don't need a new pathway to citizenship. We've already got one. Go get in line."

On gay marriage, Perry said that's an issue that should be left up to the states.

In 2005, Texas voters approved amending the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage. On Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a provision of a federal law that denies federal benefits to married gay couples and cleared the way for state laws that recognize marriage equality.

"If you want to have that type of relationship, if you want to have that type of marriage arrangement in your state, that ought to be left up to the states," Perry said. "I think it's a long way from becoming a reality in states like Texas."

Obama: S. Africa shows how people can change world

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) ? President Barack Obama challenged young Africans to rise to the challenge of shoring up progress on the continent that rests on a "fragile foundation," summoning them to fulfill the legacy of South Africa's beloved former leader Nelson Mandela.

In his own effort to carve out a piece of that legacy, Obama announced a new U.S.-led initiative to double access to electric power across Africa, vowing to help bring "light where there is currently darkness."

"Nelson Mandela showed us that one man's courage can move the world," Obama said during an evening speech Sunday at the University of Cape Town.

Obama's remarks capped an emotional day that included a visit to the Robben Island prison where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison. The 94-year-old anti-apartheid hero has been in hospital for most of this month and is said to be in critical condition.

In deeply personal remarks, the U.S. president spoke of standing in Mandela's cramped prison cell with his two young daughters, Malia and Sasha.

"Seeing them stand within the walls that once surrounded Nelson Mandela, I knew this was an experience they would never forget," he said. "I knew they now appreciated a little bit more that Madiba and other had made for freedom," Obama added, referring to Mandela by his clan name.

Obama address came nearly 50 years after Robert F. Kennedy delivered his famous "Ripple of Hope" speech at the same university, an address that Obama aides said helped inspire the president's remarks. Kennedy's speech, delivered soon after Mandela was sentenced to prison, called on young people to launch a fight against injustice, creating ripples of hope that would "build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance."

Laying out his own vision for development on the continent where his father was born, Obama said the U.S. seeks "a partnership that empowers Africans to access greater opportunity in their own lives." He dismissed the notion that the U.S. sought to meddle in Africa's affairs, saying his country would benefit from the continent's ability to manage its own affairs ? economically, politically and militarily.

"Ultimately I believe Africans should make up their own minds about what serves African interests," he said. "We trust your judgment, the judgment of ordinary people. We believe that when you control your destiny ? if you got a handle on your governments ? then governments will promote freedom and opportunity, because that will serve you."

The White House says Obama's electricity initiative, dubbed "Power Africa," symbolizes the type of cross-continent ventures the president seeks. Backed by $7 billion in U.S. investment, the power program will focus on expanding access to electricity in six African countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria and Tanzania.

Private companies ? including General Electric and Symbion Power ? will make an additional $9 billion in commitments. However, those contributions fall well short of the $300 billion the International Energy Agency says would be required to achieve universal electricity access in sub-Saharan Africa by 2030.

The funds are aimed at expanding the reach of power grids and developing geothermal, hydro, wind and solar power.

You Can Sell Your Commercial Property Quickly And Easily

Working with commercial real estate is a difficult chore, and this collection of tips will give you ideas on how to get started. Reading this article will help you become successful with your real estate dealings.

Once you have narrowed your choices down to two major contenders, you should expand your decision to include the big picture. Regardless of which way you choose, coming up with the capital is a common factor, so often times it will be be worth digging a little bit deeper to get the larger property in order to maximize your long-term profits. In effect, this is similar to an economy of scale, or also like purchasing more of an item to save money.

When choosing a broker, ask about their experience specifically in the commercial real estate market. For better results they should specialize in the specific area that you want to buy or sell in. Allow the broker to acknowledge your wish for an exclusive agreement between the two of you.

TIP! Make sure that the broker you decide to work with has experience in the commercial market. Look for brokers who specialize in the type of commercial property that you?re purchasing or selling.

You should always request the credentials of any and all inspectors working with your real estate transaction. This is true when working with pest or insect removal, since many people who are non-accredited work in these fields. By hiring an experienced professional, you?re less likely to run into problems after you buy the property.

If you plan on renting out your commercial properties, find simply and solidly constructed buildings. These are the most likely to quickly invite tenants into the space, because they know it is well-cared for. Tenants will also have to deal with maintenance issues less often, which means they have more time go about their business.

If you rent or lease the commercial properties you own, keep them occupied as much as possible. You are legally responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of unoccupied spaces. If you have multiple properties open, figure out why, and try to correct the issue that could be causing a loss of tenants.

TIP! If your property deal requires inspections (as it should), look at the inspector?s credentials. Many people in certain fields are not accredited, including pest and insect removal services.

When you are looking at a commercial property, be sure to look at the neighborhood, too. In general, it?s better to locate a business in a richer area because rich customers obviously have more discretionary income. If your business services will do better in a poor neighborhood, buy property there!

When you are negotiating to rent a commercial property, try to have the lease modified so there are few events that are considered to be defaulting on the lease. The tenant will then be less likely to violate these terms. You don?t want tenants defaulting on your leases.

Advertise the commercial property to both locals and non-locals. Many people think that investors who don?t live in their city will have no interest in their property, but this is untrue. Private investors will purchase properties outside of their area if the prices are low enough.

TIP! If you are planning to rent your commercial properties once you purchase them, opt for solidly constructed buildings that are simple in their design. Tenants will be attracted to these spots because they are maintained well.

Start drafting letters of intent by focusing on the more central issues. Once you have agreement on those, broaden the negotiations to include any smaller issues that remain. This will make negotiations less tense and make gaining agreement on the smaller issues easier to complete.

You will need to know what you are looking for in a commercial property prior to beginning your search. Features like square footage or restrooms should be predetermined to make the process easier.

TIP! When advertising your available commercial property, do so locally, but also regionally and even nationally. Most individuals make the error of thinking that only the people in their area are the ones interested in purchasing their property.

You may have to make some repairs or improvements to your property before you can move in. These changes could simply be cosmetic ones as simple as a new coat of paint or moving the furniture around. Other changes may be more significant, such as moving walls or installing new doors. If you?re leasing or renting, you can ask the landlord to make these changes at no cost to yourself.

Commercial real estate agents come in different types. You have a full service broker who works on behalf of both the tenant and landlord, then you have brokers who only work with tenants. If you intend to rent rather than buy, retaining the services of the latter type of broker may benefit you, as tenant-only brokers know what works when representing tenants.

Talk to a good tax adviser before buying anything. They?ll be able to estimate how much tax you?ll pay for the property you wish to buy, as well as how much income tax you?ll pay on your returns. Try to find a location that does not have high taxes, you can consult with an adviser for more information.

TIP! Go on a tour of all potential properties. It?s a good idea to hire a building contractor to come with you and do on-the-spot inspections of properties you are considering.

Hopefully this article has given you a more confident perspective on how you can better handle your commercial real estate endeavors. Remember to apply these tips and work on improving your skills linked to property hunting and negotiating.

Diaspora Investment summit holds in UK - Vanguard

Businessmen, captains of industries, investors, financial advisors, heads of government parastatals will today gather in the UK for a two-day summit on exploring business opportunities in Nigeria.

Speakers expected at the summit include; Dr. Dalhatu ?Tafida,?High Commissioner to the United?Kingdom,?Olusegun Aganga ,?Minister of Trade and Investment;?Mr. Barnaby Briggs, External Relations Manager,?Shell International;?Alhaji Muhammad Nadada Umar, Director General,?SME Development Agency of Nigeria?,SMEDAN;?David Smith, Chairman,?British African Business Alliance?,BABA,?Clive Carpenter ? Chairman, Nigeria Desk,?Business Council for Africa,?(BCA);?Chief Bimbo Roberts Folayan, Chairman,?Central Association of Nigerians in the United Kingdom?(CANUK) and Kingsley Aikins, President,?Diaspora Matters (DM).

Organisers of the event ,?Diaspora in the UK , ?in a statement, said ?the aim of the summit is to?bring businesses and investors face-to-face to explore the issues of investing in Nigeria, especially , in the Small and medium enterprises, SME sector, saying, ??to dispel popular myths and connect those able to actualise successful business partnerships.?

?For many Nigerians and professional investors living in the UK, the lures of expansive growth rates being achieved in Africa are highly attractive. However, it?s no secret many find the risk profile of Nigeria and other African countries daunting. Many recognise that the way business is conducted here is different from the process of investing internationally. At the same time the Nigerian SME sector is hungry for funds and has a dynamic market opportunity where the profits are often substantial. ?

Bimbo Folayan Chair of the Central Association of Nigerians in the UK said, ?Over the last two years the number of requests we have received from Nigerian Investors in the UK asking for help and advice over making investments at home has grown and grown. To answer these questions and to get the issues out on the table, we determined the best strategy would be to bring the parties together. With the help of Dr Tafida, the High Commissioner, we have been able to get support from the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) and the Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr Segun Aganga.

The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose for a third straight day. Bond yields fell for a second day, easing worries that a sudden spike in interest rates could hurt the economy.

Consumer spending rose 0.3 percent last month as incomes increased at the fastest pace in three months, the government reported. The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell 9,000 to 346,000 last week. The report added to evidence that the job market is improving modestly.

Stocks?have rallied since Tuesday as investors took advantage of lower prices after a sell-off that lasted till Monday. The plunge came after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said that the central bank could cut back on its stimulus later this year and possibly end it next year, if the economy continued to improve.

The Dow sank 560 points over Wednesday and Thursday of last week. Even with the gains this week the index is still 293 points below where it was June 18, the day before the Fed laid out its plans for how it might wind down its stimulus.

The central bank is buying $85 billion in bonds every month to hold down long-term interest rates and encourage borrowing and spending. Fed stimulus has underpinned a?stock?market rally that started in March 2009 by encouraging investors to put money into risky assets.

"What's driving that market up is that people are realizing that they are in a 'win-win' situation," said Rick Robinson, a regional Chief Investment Officer at Wells Fargo Private Bank. "If you have good economic data that should be good for?stocks, if you have poor economic data ... that means the Fed will probably have its (stimulus) longer."

The Dow closed up 114.35 points, or 0.8 percent, to 15,024.49. The S&P 500 index climbed 9.94 points, or 0.6 percent, to 1,613.20.

Nine of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 rose, led by financial?stocks. Materials companies were the only group that fell.

In a sign that investors were once again more confident in holding riskier assets, the Russell 2000 index of small-company?stocks?rose 16.09 points, or 1.7 percent, to 979.92, more than twice as much as the rest of the market.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.48 percent from 2.54 percent late Wednesday. The yield climbed as high 2.66 percent on Monday, the highest since August 2011. The rate has surged since May 3, when it touched its low for the year of 1.63 percent. Concern that the Fed is poised to start pulling back on its stimulus prompted investors to sell bonds, pushing the yield higher.

Investors who have added bonds to their portfolios at the expense of?stocks?should consider reducing their fixed income holdings because yields are likely to rise further, said Doug Cote, chief market strategist at ING Investment Management. Bonds rallied from 2007 to 2012, years that encompassed the financial crisis and the Great Recession. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to a record low of 1.39 percent in July last year.

Committee's Attack upon Lender's Make-Whole Premium Denied

By Shawn K. Watts?

The United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware (the ?Court?) recently upheld a $23.7 million make-whole payment (the ?Make-Whole Payment?) in In re School Specialty (Case No. 13-10125), denying the assertion by the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors (the ?Committee?) that the fee is unenforceable under the United States Bankruptcy Code and applicable state law.

In May of 2012, School Specialty Inc. (?School Specialty?) borrowed $70 million from Bayside Finance LLC (?Bayside?) pursuant to a credit agreement containing a make-whole provision designed to ensure that Bayside would receive its bargained-for yield in the event that School Specialty prepaid the loan.

Less than a year later, School Specialty breached the credit agreement?s minimum liquidity covenant, which triggered the borrower?s obligation to make the Make-Whole Payment. The parties thereupon entered into a forbearance agreement, which recognized the borrower?s obligation for the Make-Whole Payment.

Shortly thereafter, School Specialty filed a chapter 11 bankruptcy petition and sought an order approving debtor-in-possession financing to be provided by Bayside (the ?DIP Loan?). The DIP Loan request acknowledged School Specialty?s debt to Bayside, including a roll-up of the prepetition indebtedness into the post-petition DIP loan and the Make-Whole Payment. The Court approved the DIP Loan on an interim basis. Shortly thereafter, the United States Trustee appointed the Committee and the Committee thereupon filed a motion seeking to disallow the Make-Whole Payment claiming, among other things, that the Make-Whole Payment was an unenforceable penalty under New York state law because the amount was disproportionate to Bayside?s probable loss, the payment was an unreasonable fee under federal bankruptcy law, and the payment constitutes a claim for unmatured interest.

The Court denied the Committee?s motion and upheld the Make-Whole Payment. Under the basic federal rule in bankruptcy that state law governs the determination of property rights in the assets of a debtor?s estate, the Court applied New York law to analyze the enforceability of the Make-Whole Payment. The Court determined that prepayment premiums, such as the Make-Whole Payment, are enforceable under New York law: (1) when the actual damages are difficult to determine, and (2) the sum is not plainly disproportionate to the possible loss considering the reasonableness of the damages determined at the time of contract, not at the time of breach. In considering whether the amount of the Make-Whole Payment was plainly disproportionate to Bayside?s possible loss, the Court determined that the fee was calculated so that the lender would receive its bargained-for yield and the fee was the result of an arms-length transaction with which the Court should not interfere.

The Court next held that that, even if the reasonableness standard applicable to fees under 11 U.S.C. ? 506(b) is applicable to the Make-Whole Payment, such payment satisfied this standard because it was not an enforceable penalty nor plainly disproportionate to Bayside?s probable loss.

Finally, the Court held that the Make-Whole Payment was not a claim for unmatured interest, siding with the majority view that make-whole premiums should be analyzed as prepayment penalties rather than claims for unmatured interest.

By endorsing the general trend upholding make-whole payments when the credit agreement is clear and unambiguous, the stipulated amount is not plainly disproportionate to the lender?s potential loss, and the contract was the product of an arm?s length negotiation, the School Specialty decision should provide comfort to lenders that elect to structure and price their credit agreements using make-whole premiums.

Texas Senate GOP passes restrictive abortion bill

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Texas Republicans have passed new abortion restrictions expected to close almost every abortion clinic in the nation's second most populous state.

The Republican-controlled Senate voted for the bill while hundreds of protesters screamed from the gallery. Reporters and Democrats saw the voting begin after midnight, but Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said it began just before.

Texas' special legislative session ended at midnight, and Democrats spent most of the day filibustering the bill. Republicans cited rules to eventually force a vote to end the filibuster.

The bill bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and requires that all procedures take place in a surgical center.

Doctors who perform abortions would also need admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles. The surgical center requirement would shut down 37 of Texas' 42 abortion clinics.

(AP) ? In the final minutes of his life, Odin Lloyd sent a series of texts to his sister.

"Did you see who I was with?" said the first, at 3:07 a.m. June 17. "Who?" she finally replied.

"NFL," he texted back, then added: "Just so you know."

It was 3:23 a.m. Moments later, Lloyd would be dead in what a prosecutor called an execution-style shooting orchestrated by New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez because his friend talked to the wrong people at a nightclub. Hernandez was charged on Wednesday with murder.

Hernandez was cut from the NFL team less than two hours after he was arrested and led from his North Attleborough home in handcuffs, and nine days after Lloyd's body was discovered by a jogger in a remote area of an industrial park not far from Hernandez's home. The 2011 Pro Bowl selection had signed a five-year contract last summer with the Patriots worth $40 million.

His attorney, Michael Fee, called the case circumstantial during a Wednesday afternoon court hearing packed with news reporters, curiosity seekers and police officers. Fee said there was a "rather hysterical atmosphere" surrounding the case and urged the judge to disregard his client's celebrity status as he asked for Hernandez, 23, to be released on bail.

The judge, though, ordered Hernandez held without bail on the murder charge and five weapons counts. If convicted, Hernandez could get life in prison without parole.

Hernandez stood impassively with his hands cuffed in front of him as Bristol County Assistant District Attorney Bill McCauley laid out a detailed timeline of the events, cobbled together from sources including witnesses, surveillance video, text messages and data from cell phone towers.

Lloyd, 27, a semi-pro football player with the Boston Bandits, had known Hernandez about a year and was dating the sister of Hernandez's fianc?e, the mother of Hernandez's 8-month-old baby, McCauley said.

On June 14, Lloyd went with Hernandez to a Boston club, Rumor. McCauley said Hernandez was upset Lloyd had talked to people there with whom Hernandez had trouble. He did not elaborate.

Two days later, McCauley said, on June 16, Hernandez texted two unidentified friends. He asked them to hurry to Massachusetts from Connecticut. At 9:05 p.m., a few minutes after the first message to his friends, Hernandez texted Lloyd, telling him he wanted to get together, McCauley said.

Later, surveillance footage from Hernandez's home showed his friends arrive and go inside. Hernandez, holding a gun, then told someone in the house he was upset and couldn't trust anyone anymore, the prosecutor said.

At 1:12 a.m., the three left in Hernandez's rented silver Nissan Altima, McCauley said. Cell towers tracked their movements to a gas station off the highway. There, he said, Hernandez bought blue Bubblicious cotton candy gum.

At 2:32 a.m., they arrived outside Lloyd's home in Boston and texted him that they were there. McCauley said Lloyd's sister saw him get into Hernandez's car.

From there, surveillance cameras captured images of what the prosecutor said was Hernandez driving the silver Altima through the city of Boston. As they drove back toward North Attleborough, Hernandez told Lloyd he was upset about what happened at the club and didn't trust him, McCauley said. That was when Lloyd began sending texts to his sister.

Surveillance video showed the car entering the industrial park and at 3:23 a.m. driving down a gravel road near where Lloyd's body was found. Four minutes later, McCauley said, the car emerges. During that period, employees working an overnight shift nearby heard several gunshots, McCauley said.

McCauley said Lloyd was shot multiple times, including twice from above as he was lying on the ground. He said five .45 caliber casings were found at the scene.

Authorities did not say who fired the shots or identify the two others with Hernandez.

At 3:29 a.m., surveillance at Hernandez's house shows him arriving, McCauley said.

"The defendant was walking through the house with a gun in his hand. That's captured on video," he said.

His friend is also seen holding a gun, and neither weapon has been found, McCauley said.

Then, the surveillance system stopped recording, and footage was missing from the six to eight hours after the slaying, he said.

The afternoon of June 17, the prosecutor said, Hernandez returned the rental car, offering the attendant a piece of blue Bubblicious gum when he dropped it off. While cleaning the car, the attendant found a piece of blue Bubblicious gum and a shell casing, which he threw away. Police later searched the trash bin and found the gum and the casing. The prosecutor said it was tested and matched the casings found where Lloyd was killed.

As McCauley outlined the killing, Lloyd's family members cried and held each other, and two were so overcome that they had to leave the courtroom.

The Patriots said in a written statement after Hernandez's arrest but before the murder charge was announced that cutting Hernandez was "the right thing to do."

"Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation," it said.

Hernandez, originally from Bristol, Conn., was drafted by the Patriots in 2010 out of the University of Florida, where he was an All-American.

During the draft, one team said it wouldn't take him under any circumstances, and he was passed over by one club after another before New England picked him in the fourth round. Afterward, Hernandez said he had failed a drug test in college ? reportedly for marijuana ? and was up front with teams about it.

A Florida man filed a lawsuit last week claiming Hernandez shot him in the face after they argued at a strip club in February.

Hernandez became a father on Nov. 6 and said he intended to change his ways: "Now, another one is looking up to me. I can't just be young and reckless Aaron no more. I'm going to try to do the right things."

Kerry: Urgent progress is needed on Mideast peace

KUWAIT CITY (AP) ? Secretary of State John Kerry says he's set no ad hoc deadline for making concrete progress in talks between Israel and the Palestinians that he's continuing this week, but that long before September there needs to be some kind of progress shown.

The U.N. General Assembly reconvenes in September and if attempts at reaching an accord between the two sides fail, the Palestinians have said they'd pursue a strategy of international recognition on their own. U.N. General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in November to upgrade the Palestinians from U.N. observer to non-voting member state.

Kerry is heading to Amman, Jordan, which he will use as a base for diplomacy with Jordanian, Israeli and Palestinian officials.

Kerry spoke Wednesday during a news conference with Kuwait's emir, Sheik Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah.

Kerry has been shuttling between the Israelis and the Palestinians in search of a formula to restart talks. So far, there have been no signs of a breakthrough.

Later Wednesday, Kerry heads to Amman, Jordan, which he will use as a base for diplomatic talks with Jordanian, Israeli, Palestinian and other officials.

It is Kerry's fifth visit to the region since becoming secretary of state earlier this year.

"The time is getting near where we need to make some judgments. Last time, I was here, I said it's time for leaders to make some hard decisions," Kerry said. "That stands. It is time. Why is it urgent? It's urgent because time is the enemy of a peace process."

"I don't want to trap myself or any of the principals in this with arbitrary ? or somewhat ad hoc time limits," Kerry said.

But he added: "Long before September we need to be showing some kind of progress in some way. ... That's why I'm here for this visit and I hope it can be productive."

Gamewright Games: Summer Fun for the Entire Family {Giveaway ...

TopDisclosure1

I was so glad to receive a box of Gamewright games in the mail to review this month, since?my family has been cooped up inside for much of it.? Between many rainy days, a sodden yard, and two different sickness sweeping through the family we just?couldn?t win!? I hate resorting to constant television and electronics during rough weeks like this, and Gamewright certainly came to the rescue!

Gamewright

One thing I love about every Gamewright game we?ve tried is the packaging.? The games are pretty compact in size and the boxes are very sturdy.? Our game shelf often becomes a disaster area and I?ve found that any game in flimsy packaging soon falls apart and I end up throwing the game away when the pieces get torn up or lost.? The compact size of Gamewright?s games lend themselves perfectly?to throwing into a suitcase or backpack when packing for vacation.? I never leave for vacation without at least one great game that both children and adults can enjoy.? When stuck in the hotel on a rainy day or the car breaks down, a great game can save the day.? For our family, that game has most often been Gamewright?s Rat-a-Tat-Cat.? I?m glad that we now have 4 other great options for vacation games on our shelf from Gamewright- let me tell you about them!

Mermaid Beach, appropriate for ages 6+,?was the favorite game of my mermaid loving 8-year-old daughter.? During the game players try to?collect as many shell cards as possible with the help of beautifully illustrated mermaid cards.? This game has a lot of rules to learn, but after playing a few times my children could sit down?for a game and play without my help.??Mostly a game of luck, rather than strategy, it is a great game to play with multiple ages since the younger players aren?t at a disadvantage.Gamewright Mermaid Beach

Castle Keep, appropriate for ages 8+, is exactly the kind of game I love to play with my older children.? In fact,?I got so caught up playing with my?two daughters that?supper was an hour late!? The rules are simple and easy to learn, yet the game requires thought and strategy.? Players race to be the first to complete their castle and must choose each turn whether to build their own castle or attack an opponents castle.? I really love this game, in fact I think it can be enjoyed by grownups even after the kids go to bed, so it will probably be the one in my suitcase on our next vacation!Gamewright Castle Keep

Sleeping Queens?is the game my 9-year-old?asks to play most often.? While it is marked for ages 8 and up, my 6-year-old?caught on very quickly and enjoys playing with us.? In this game players try to be the first to wake five sleeping queens.? My kids love the fairy tale aspects of this adorable game.? Though it has?many?rules concerning what each card does, we found it to be easy to remember since?each card?s action makes sense.? Knights try to steal opponents queens, but players can battle back with a dragon card.? Or, you can put an opponents queen back to sleep with a sleeping potion card- unless the opponent has a magic wand to ward off the spell.? Also, I?ve found it to be a quick game, so it is a great one to choose when the kids beg to play a game right before bedtime.

????Gamewright Sleeping Queens The Scrambled States of America Game- Deluxe Edition, for ages 8 and up, is a sneaky game and I love it!? While kids don?t need to know facts about the states to play, they quickly learn those facts?during game play.? I?m a homeschooling mom, so anytime I can sneak in some educational value to my kids play I am on board!? Players exercise quick reflexes and observational skills and learn the names, capitals, nicknames, shapes and positions of the states while playing the game.? My children find this game quite funny and love to race to win their states.

Gamewright Scrambled States of America

Gamewright games are the perfect choice for family game?time this summer.? Whether cooped up indoors to beat the heat, or to avoid a summer storm, Gamewright games will help pass the time.? Don?t forget to throw one or two in your suitcase when packing for vacation, you?ll be glad you did!

Babies know when a cuddle is coming

June 25, 2013 ? Babies as young as two months know when they are about to be picked up and change their body posture in preparation, according to new research.

Professor Vasu Reddy, of the University of Portsmouth, has found most babies aged two to four months understand they are about to be picked up the moment their mothers come towards them with their arms outstretched and that they make their bodies go still and stiff in anticipation, making it easier to be picked up.

This is the first study to examine how babies adjust their posture in anticipation to offset the potentially destabilising effect of being picked up.

Professor Reddy said: "We didn't expect such clear results. From these findings we predict this awareness is likely to be found even earlier, possibly not long after birth.

"The results suggest we need to re-think the way we study infant development because infants seem to be able to understand other people's actions directed towards them earlier than previously thought. Experiments where infants are observers of others' actions may not give us a full picture of their anticipatory abilities."

The findings could also be used as an early indicator of some developmental problems, including autism. It was reported by researchers in 1943 that children with autism don't appear to make preparatory adjustments to being picked up.

The researchers, who included Dr Gabriela Markova of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, and Dr Sebastian Wallot of the University of Aarhus, did two studies, one on 18 babies aged three months, and a second on ten babies aged two to four months old.

In both, babies were placed on a pressure mat which measured their postural adjustments during three phases: As their mothers chatted with their babies; as the mothers opened their arms to pick them up; and as the babies were picked up.

The results revealed infants as young as two months made specific adjustments when their mother stretched her arms out to pick them up. These included extending and stiffening the legs which increases body rigidity and stability, and widening or raising their arms, which helps to create a space for the mother to hold the infant's chest.

Between two and three months of age the babies' gaze moved from mostly looking at their mother's face to often looking at her hands as she stretched her arms out towards them.

The results reveal two important findings -- first, that from as early as two months babies make specific postural adjustments to make it easier to pick them up even before their mother touches them. And second, it appears that babies learn to increase the smoothness and coordination of their movements between two and four months, rather than develop new types of adjustment.

"In other words, they rapidly become more adept at making it easier for parents to pick them up," Professor Reddy said.

The mothers in the study were asked about their babies' physical responses before the tests and some reported their babies stiffened their legs or raised their arms in preparation for being picked up, but video footage watched frame by frame revealed physical adjustments happened to a greater degree and more subtly than mothers had noticed.

The researchers suggest more research now needs to be done to examine the extent to which infants discriminate between different kinds of actions directed at them, between familiar and unfamiliar actions, and how infant anticipation of these actions is influenced by the different maternal styles they each experience.

The research is published in the latest issue of the journal Plos One.

24 hours of Le Mans: Audi leads, but driver dies

24 hours of Le Mans: Danish driver Allan Simonsen was killed in the first 10 minutes of the race. The Audi team was in the lead but two cars faced mechanical problems some six hours into the 24 hours of Le Mans, which will end Sunday.

By Trung LaTieule,?Associated Press / June 22, 2013

Audi held the early top three spots Saturday in the 24 Hours of Le?Mans which was marred by the death of Danish driver Allan Simonsen at the start of the endurance event.

It was the first driver fatality at Le?Mans since 1997. Organizers said the 34-year-old Simonsen was taken to the hospital after his Aston Martin No. 95 spun at high speed only 10 minutes into the race and his car skidded into the barrier at the Tertre Rouge corner where cars typically reach speeds of up to 170 kph (105 mph).

Simonsen died at the hospital soon after arrival "due to his injuries," organizers said.

Aston Martin Racing, which had entered five Vantage V8 cars between the GTE-Pro and GTE-Am classes, will continue in the race "at the specific request" of Simonsen's family and in tribute to the Danish driver.

"I would like to extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the individuals, and families whose friends or loved ones were involved in today's terrible tragedy," Aston Martin Racing managing director John Gaw said.

The safety car came out after Simonsen's crash and the race was held up for nearly an hour to repair the guard rail.

Simonsen was participating for the seventh time at the endurance race, which is won by the team that completes the most laps in 24 hours with up to three drivers alternating. He finished second in the GT2 class at Le?Mans three years ago. He clocked the fastest time in qualifying Thursday in the GTE Am class.

Simonsen and Danish co-drivers Kristian Poulsen and Christoffer Nygaard were leading the GTE Am class in the world endurance championship after topping their category at Silverstone in April and finishing second in Spa-Francorchamps last month.

"Aston Martin Racing will not make any further comment until the precise circumstances of the accident have been determined. Next of kin have been informed," Simonsen's team said.

IndyCar series leader Helio Castroneves tweeted: "Very sad to know about the fatal accident of Allan Simonsen on Le?Mans today. Praying for him and (his) family."

After the crash, drivers were kept in a holding pattern in which cars had to stay in their positions for nearly an hour plus the first pit stops were made.

At the wheel of Audi No. 1, defending champion Andre Lotterer of Germany led pole-sitter Allan McNish's Audi No. 2 by 26 seconds after 20 laps. Lucas Di Grassi's Audi No. 3 was in third place, followed by two Toyota cars.

But six hours into the race, the No. 1 and No. 3 Audi cars were experiencing mechanical problems Saturday.

Audi is seeking a 12th title at the world's most famous endurance race. It is second for most victories by a manufacturer, behind Porsche's 16.

A total of 56 cars started in the 81st edition of Le?Mans, which will end at 1300 GMT on Sunday. The race can be watched live online.

Sebastien Enjolras lost his life in pre-qualifying in 1997. The last driver fatality in the 24-hour race was Jo Gartner in 1986.

The worst crash in Le?Mans history occurred in 1955 when Pierre Levegh's Mercedes flew into the crowd, killing more than 80 spectators.

?He was just always trying to make someone laugh.?

Gunmen kill 11 foreign tourists in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Gunmen killed 11 foreign tourists before dawn Sunday as they were visiting one of the world's highest mountains in a remote area of northern Pakistan, police said.

The tourists from Russia, China and the Ukraine were shot dead at the base camp of Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest mountain in the world, said local police chief Barkat Ali. It's unclear if they were planning to climb the mountain or were just visiting the base camp, which is located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan.

The police chief learned about the attack when the tourists' local guide called the police station around 1 a.m. local time on Sunday, said Ali.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Pakistan is home to several insurgencies and internal conflicts but Gilgit-Baltistan is generally a peaceful area, although it has experienced some sectarian violence between Sunni and Shiite Muslims in recent years. The area is a popular destination for tourists because it includes a large number of very tall mountains in the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges, including K2, the second highest mountain in the world.

Martin Luther King Jr. Detroit March Of 1963 Commemorated 50 Years Later With Walk Down Woodward

DETROIT -- Thousands participated in a Detroit march commemorating the 50th anniversary of one that Martin Luther King Jr. led in 1963.

The walk down Woodward Avenue on Saturday morning culminated in a riverfront rally at Hart Plaza.

The civil rights icon visited Detroit on June 23, 1963, to lead tens of thousands in a freedom walk and also previewed his "I Have a Dream" speech.

Martin Luther King III, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton participated in Saturday's march and rally.

Detroit NAACP President Wendell Anthony said the march "signifies that the work for freedom and justice must continue" in Detroit and worldwide.

Sharpton says it's important to keep fighting for justice and marchers weren't merely taking "a nostalgia trip down Woodward."

Plane with wing walker crashes at Ohio show; 2 die

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) ? A plane carrying a wing walker crashed Saturday at an air show and exploded into flames, killing the pilot and stunt walker instantly, authorities said.

Dayton International Airport spokeswoman Linda Hughes and Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Anne Ralston confirmed the deaths to The Associated Press.

The crash happened at around 12:45 p.m. at the Vectren Air Show near Dayton. No spectators were injured.

The show has been canceled for the remainder of the day. The names of those killed weren't released immediately, but a video posted on WHIO-TV showing the flight and crash identified the performer as wing walker Jane Wicker. A schedule posted on the event's website also had Wicker scheduled to perform.

The video shows the plane turn upside-down as Wicker sits on top of the wing. The plane then tilts and crashes to the ground, exploding into flames as spectators scream.

"All of a sudden I heard screaming and looked up and there was a fireball," spectator Stan Thayer of Wilmington, Ohio, told WHIO.

Wicker's website says she responded to a classified ad from the Flying Circus Airshow in Bealteton, Va., in 1990, for a wing walking position, thinking it would be fun.

She told WDTN-TV in an interview this week that her signature move as hanging underneath the plane's wing by her feet and sit on the bottom of the airplane while it's upside-down.

"I'm never nervous or scared because I know if I do everything as I usually do, everything's going to be just fine," she told the station.

In 2007, veteran stunt pilot Jim LeRoy was killed at the Dayton show when his biplane crashed and burned.

Organizers were presenting a trimmed-down show and expected smaller crowds at Dayton after the Air Force Thunderbirds and other military participants pulled out this year because of federal budget cuts.

The air show, one of the country's oldest, usually draws around 70,000 people and has a $3.2 million impact on the local economy. Without military aircraft and support, the show expected attendance to be off 30 percent or more.

PST: Fire continue turnaround by topping Crew

Two weeks ago I told you the Fire?s season looked promising going forward, and they didn?t disappoint.

After Columbus took the lead through a Federico Higuain penalty, Dilly Duka and Mike McGee quickfired consecutive scores in the second half to complete a shocking comeback as Chicago stunned the Crew 2-1.

The win gives the Fire 12 points in their last 5 fixtures, and completely muddies the waters in the Eastern Conference.

With all three points, Chicago is now just three points back of fifth position, and two behind Columbus in sixth.

The turnaround exactly coincides with Mike Magee?s debut with the Fire, having come over in exchange for the rights to Robby Rogers.? The winger now has 9 goals in 13 MLS matches this season, and he?s got a goal in all 4 matches with the Fire since the transfer ? 3 wins and a draw.? Saturday night?s ? a header into the top corner on a cross from Lindpere ? is also Magee?s 6th goal in his last 6 matches between both clubs.

Also instrumental in Chicago?s turnaround is Bakary Soumare, the Malian central defender who joined in May from Philadelphia and made an immediate impact.

Since joining the squad, Soumare has been instrumental at the back.? The fire have given up just 4 goals in 4 matches since Soumare?s return, picking up points in each one.? In fact, in the two matches for Philadelphia against Chicago prior to his transfer, Soumare and the Union held the Fire to a goose egg on both occasions.

The Fire, with their new found form, have two massive opportunities coming up.? They have a wonderful chance for points against San Jose at home and Sporting KC at home in a match with major playoff implications.

SOUTH FORK, Colo. (AP) ? A massive wildfire working overtime in hot, windy weather was threatening a tourist town in Colorado's southwestern mountains on Friday.

South Fork, home to about 400 full-time residents, was evacuated as the 47-square-mile acre West Fork Fire moved closer.

Wildland firefighters were teaming up with local firefighters to try to protect the town, which is surrounded by the Rio Grande National Forest. State authorities said the fire is about seven miles southwest of town and has been advancing at a rate of about a mile an hour. However, fire spokeswoman Penny Bertram won't speculate on the likelihood of the town burning. She said there's a high probability of the fire reaching the town if the fire continues to behave as it has, though she said crews were staging resources to protect its buildings.

"They're hedging their bets," Bertram said.

Residents were being sent to a high school in a neighboring town.

South Fork's mayor, Kenneth Brooke, sent his children and grandchildren to a safe location and stayed behind, helping several dozen area fire responders prepare for hosing down structures.

Brooke said authorities are allowing him to stay in South Fork until the blaze crests a nearby mountain, expected Friday afternoon. Until then, the mayor was taking phone calls from nervous neighbors and telling them the town's grim forecast.

"I just tell them it doesn't looks good," Brook told The Associated Press by phone Friday. "I tell them the truth, that the fire is coming. I just tell them to keep themselves safe, evacuate as need be and don't come back.

"We're just watching the fire and doing what we can for people's properties, but mostly it's just waiting. Right now I'm saying, 'Stay out.'"

Bertram said the hot, dry and windy weather along with large stands of beetle-killed trees are causing extreme fire behavior. While most fires actively burn four hours a day, this one is burning for 12 hours a day, helping it to mushroom in recent days.

Firefighters have largely let the lightning-sparked fire burn because it's too hot and erratic to fight on the ground. Water and slurry drops from air tankers also haven't been effective, with pilots reporting that their drops largely evaporated before hitting the ground.

"There's no stopping it," Bertram said.

The town is a popular spot for hiking and camping. The fictional Griswold family camped in South Fork in 1983's "National Lampoon's Vacation." The famous scene where a dog urinates on a picnic basket was filmed at South Fork's Riverbend Resort, called "Kamp Komfort" in the movie.

The town was incorporated in 1992, making it Colorado's youngest municipality. The town lost 11 structures in the 2002 Million Fire, which charred more than 14 square miles.

South Fork residents are used to damaging wildfires, but this year's is shaping up to be the worst, Brooke said.

"Our tourists are what support the town. The fires are going to run everybody away. So that's going to hurt," he said.
